The new Nikkor 300mm f/4 PF ED VR lens has three VR settings - Off, Normal and Sport.  Question, should I use the Sport VR when hand shooting with a fast shutter speed? As a rule I always turn off the VR when my shutter speed is over 500.  With the new Sport VR does this change the general rule?

Comments appreciated.

I believe that setting is specifically designed for when you're panning (at least that's what my 70-200mm's manual says), so it should have some situational use.

As near as I can tell with a few minutes of searching, it appears that this lens is setup the same as Adam's meaning the Sports setting is more for panning and following subjects in sports.  Your best bet is to try a few shots of the same thing on each setting and pick the results that work best for you.  I have heard from folks who turn VR off when shooting at 1/1000 and faster but never as low as 1/500.  I have rarely turned on VR on the longer lenses as I typically shoot them from a monopod and I generally shoot over 1/1000 even when hand holding my 70-200 or longer lenses.  There have been a few occasions I've turned it on with my 70-200 hand held...

Thanks Adam and TBonz, I shot a football game with the VR sport setting on and the pictures came out clear and sharp.
