NEWB here and I just purchased a D600, w/3600 clicks and a new Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD lens for the wife. A significant upgrade from her old Canon EOS Rebel. She's read everything in the owners manual and can't get the autofocus to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Is that the only lens she is having trouble with? Try cleaning the contacts, or just removing and resetting the lens.

Great advise above...I have never dealt with that particular lens, but also confirm that it is set to auto focus if there is a switch as I've seen that changed accidentally before.  You might want to try a reset of the camera body if you bought it used to be sure all settings are at default settings.  Many Nikon bodies including a D600 can be set to use "back button" focus which uses the AE-L/AF-L button for focus rather than the shutter button.  When I get a used body, I always do the reset and then step through all the settings to get them set as I like them...

Oh!  And, welcome to the forums!  Hope you and your wife join us regularly!

Good advice so far - provided the D600 offers the same switches than the D610, you will also have an A/M switch at the lower left side where the lens connects, to disable autofocussing.

If ANY of the switches (camera or lens) is set to M, focussing will be manual.

Indeed, good call. Just last month I picked up my D610, changed the lens and discovered that AF wasn't working. After a few minutes it dawned on me that I had left the camera set to manual focus. The lens I had on it previously was a macro and I always use manual focus with macros.

The suggestion to do a reset is also, I believe, a good idea. Who knows what other settings were changed by the previous owner.

Thanks for the great info. Wife did some further reading in the manual and found a setting she had missed. All is well now. This is a great camera and she's very happy.

Thanks again!
