Apparently there was a problem with the firmware on at least some of the early production runs of this lens. I'm assuming that may be part of the reason for their scarcity. I admit though that it seems strange to see a lens listed as "coming soon" when it already has a good number of reviews. Also, list me as one who is extremely interested in this lens.

I think the first review I saw of this lens was from someone living in Australia. Looks like Nikon decided to use you guys for beta testing.

I've noticed that it's now available to buy in some local stores. Think I'll also be having a look, although I may end up buying either the Tamron 150-600 or the Sigma 150-600, have to do a bit of online research I think before making up my mind.

Nikon Rumors is now reporting that the 200-500 as well as the new 300 are in stock at both B&H and Adorama.

I live in Canada. The 200-500MM Nikkor has been available for at least a month now. Best price so far is Amazon.ca $1600 CAD.
Should be great for Birding.

Thanks for the responses!
I found the 200-500mm available at nikonusa.com a couple of weeks ago, so made the purchase. So far, I have used it primarily to photograph bald eagles, swans, and small birds near home and in the Mississippi River valley, which is an hour away. The results have been quite good, but I need more practice.
While the lens is large and heavy, it handles well and is not too difficult to carry over long distances when tucked into a folded elbow.

Pics or it didn't happen.... We're desperate for some photos. Or have I missed them?

Good point, dcbear78. Eight photos have been posted in the gallery called "Early Photos with AF-S 200-500mm F5.6 Zoom."

I didn't know this lens was coming out. I wonder how my new Sigma 150-600 C would compare.
