I'm going to use the "C" word....I hope I don't get banned...
Canon printers are really awesome. I scored a Pixma ip6600 eight years ago at Target for $40. I still use it all the time.

Are you going to use it primarily for photos or do you want an all-in-one style?
I'll be using it for photos mostly but will at some point use it for documents also.

Given the cost of ink cartridges, compared with paying out for having prints printed, I have gone for the getting prints printed. I have a HP Photosmart Plus printer, but currently the majority of distribution of images is via electronic means. However, If I had a lot of photos to print out on a regular basis, I would consider a higher quality printer.
having thought about it, your probably right Tony. Still it would be nice to have the option if needed. I've been using my local Jessops store for prints. Not sure of any other highstreet shops left that do printing. I have also used www.posterxxl.co.uk for some larger print jobs, really good service

Never ever pay full retail for printer ink. Never! I buy ink from eBay and it costs a laughable fraction of what it would in a major retail store.
Here's an example... yes, $17 dollars for 3 full refills for my printer. I've printed dozens of images with this ink and it works fine and so far looks like it will last just as long as the brand name stuff. Maybe it's not 100 year archival ink but for my purposes it works fine.

As for a printer; look at either a Canon Pixma or an HP Photosmart All-in-one. Both brands make decent units for under $100.
Just remember that AIO printers, especially inexpensive ones, do a lot of things marginally well. Photos will be "good but not great".
