My ex-wife runs a home fashion outlet and we had been in discussion about taking some photos of some of her clothes. Initial brief was for a more edgy, urban almost grungy look. We found some girls with tattoos, but when I saw the clothes being used I kinda scrapped that idea. Only my 2nd ever time with models (too be fair only 1 of the 4 had modelled before) and only really a handful of portrait shoots under my belt.

To make it worse I have never used lighting before, and I received my new studio setup that week so I wanted to use it. Did a heap of research before and the shots where it was used I am thrilled with. The natural light ones, not so much. Some with speedlights, but even still I have not used these much before.

My advice to anyone getting into lighting.... Get a light meter. I got one a couple weeks ago when I knew this was all happening. Completely takes the guess work of things. Brilliant device.

This one you will have seen in the best pictures thread. But I thought I will explain things. People can either tell me where I went wrong, or others may learn from either how I succeeded or my mistakes. Either way is good....

I was originally shooting this the other way, from the other end of the corridor with my strobe besde me. But I had this thought to shoot it the other way and I couldn't be happier. I metered for the natural light coming through the window. I had a strobe with a soft box set up behind about 3 metres and to the left of the model. I set this up to match the reading I got from the window light. This shot is almost untouched. Just the slightest of colour adjustments with VSCO filmpack, lens adjustments and my normal sharpening. Exposure has not been touched. My favourite shot from the day.

Same set up as the first.

This was up stairs. As each model was finished getting hair and make up done, I was taking some head shots and half length portraits. Using a 22" beauty dish high camera left (just) with a softbox straight on at about waist height as fill (I think about 2 stops less). Again used light meter to achieve settings I wanted at f8. Perfect shot first time. Again almost straight out of the camera. I was blown away by this shot. The colours in her hair, make up and her skin tone just loved this lighting. A 100% crop on this is just insane. The details is ridiculous.

First of my natural light shots and probably the only one I kinda liked. Unfortunately I had to work to other people's schedules. This shot would have been a million times better taken about 8 hours later and controlled with lights.

One of the first shots I took on the day. I envisioned this shot before getting there. I wanted the model leaning back with the shadow. Was going to bring the beauty dish with a honeycomb grid with me but couldn't be bothered moving it from where I had it set up, and knew I would want it back there later for other girls. So just used a bare Cactus RF60 speedlight triggered by Cactus V6 trigger.

Cactus RF60/V6 combo again. This time in a 60" reflective umbrella camera right. Light meter to save the day (and time) again.

Finished the day by just walking along the street. Found this chair and I liked the wall behind it. There was a pub behind me to the left. Some well intoxicated patrons were very interested in what we were up to and the girls were engaged in some banter. I was aiming for a serious shot, but I liked this one better. On camera SB-700 in TTL as I wasn't carrying my umbrellas for this... In hindsight I could've got my assistant to hold it off to one side, but too late now. Worked well enough.

Got some feedback and have changed this image. Brought it back to straight. Also did some dodging on the shadow on her face and the leg with the tattoo.
