Decided to give a crack at doing something a bit different... errrr... well, doing something I haven't done in a long time but putting a new eye and some genuine effort to it. I guess that's a better way of explaining what I'm up to. A ways back I would try to capture song lyrics in my photography, most of the time by just giving an image a title that vaguely matched. Sometimes it worked, others it was obviously forced. Actually, most of the time it was forced ;)

So... I captured an image Saturday evening and said damn that is really close to the mood of that song I like, it's just missing something to bring it all together. A few hours later, with the help of coffee, some stock photography, a lot of Photoshop, and a new painting program I created this test version just to check the viability of my idea. Still need to work on the mood and texturing but I "think" I'm heading in the right direction.

So, with all that babble out of the way, I present the early mock up of "The Last Pale Light in the West"

And for those interested, here's the song I am drawing inspiration from:

In my hands, I hold the ashes
In my veins, black pitch runs
In my chest, a fire catches

In my way, a setting sun
Dark clouds gather 'round me
To the west, my soul is bound
And I will go on ahead, free
There's a light yet to be found

The last pale light in the west

Wow! Really nice! I think you've captured the mood of the song just perfectly.

And what a great idea…I've had a similar desire to illustrate bits and pieces of poetry, so perhaps you've inspired me to get off my lazy bum and start working out how to do that.

Thanks :)

Well written poetry is layered with emotion and subtext that play out like a movie script or vignette in our heads, at least it does for me. A dozen words can be as expressive as a picture's thousand and I've always wanted to sync those two up. I think this is the closest I've ever come.

Very nice job...I like your idea of a photo capturing a song / poem / phrase...I may have to try that with some of my non-sports stuff.

Love this idea (and of course the picture). Got me thinking now...

Good music/poetry always paints a picture in our mind. Converting that into displayable art that expresses our internal vision externally is a real challenge... but worth it if you put the effort into making the two mesh.

Here's a much earlier one I did. It was taken from a poem about a person who had found the love of their life in a dream. Years later the dreams faded and they couldn't get back to that place in their dreams any longer, no matter how much they desired it. One night they were dreaming of the place they "first met" but they weren't there... just as the sun beamed into a window and woke them up:
