Not really a beginner type question, but couldnt think where to post this one.

What would be your ideal set up, if money wasnt a factor. Here's my wee wish list to get the ball rolling.

Nikon D810

Nikon AF-S 24mm f1.4G ED

Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.4G

Nikon AF-S14-24mm f/2.8G ED

Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G

Nikon AF-S 58mm F/1.4G

Nikon AF-S 105mm f/2.8G VR Micro IF-ED

Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f2.8 ED VR II Lens

Might even chuck in a very large zoom, just for the hell of it.

AF-S 400mm f/2.8E VR FL ED

or

AF-S 800mm f/5.6E VR FL ED

Also have to add that I would be putting a few good flash guns and some trigger gear in there too.

And yes a really good bag to carry it all in.

As I do both product- and PJ-style shoots I would need both speed and resolution...

Bodies: D810 and D4s

Zooms: the trinity (14-24, 24-70 and 70-200) and a 200-400.

Primes: 24/1.4, 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 85/1.4, 180/2.8 (the 200/2 is too heavy), 300/2.8 and 400/2.8

Specialty lenses: 24 PC-E, 105 Micro VR, 200 D Micro and 105/2 DC.

If I can include some non-current lenses I would rather have the old 105/4 AI than any of the later 105 Micros and I would not be without my 105/2.5.

Sachtler eng2 tripod, Sachtler levelling bowl, RRS BH-50 ballhead, RRS L-brackets and lens feet and a nodal slide. Manfrotto monopod with arca-compatible QR.

Some SB-910 speedlights with TTL PocketWizards.

OK...this will be easy (and fun!)...

Bodies:

D4s x 2

D810 x 2

Flash (just in case):

SB910 x2

Lenses:

As Peter said, the Trinity (14-24, 24-70, 70-200) along with my 200-400

24 1.4

85 1.4

105 Micro 2.8

200 2.0 (yep, heavy, but I want it anyway!) (same can be applied to the next 3)

300 2.8

400 2.8

600 4.0

1.4, 1.7 and 2.0 TC's

current monopod, new tripod (TBD), larger bag(s) to fit all the goodies, a press pass valid at any sporting event at any time and someone who will pay me to use it...

Oh, and when they release it, I want the new Nikon 10-1000mm f.1.8 and then I'll probably sell the TC's along with a few lenses and one each of the bodies above to buy two new D7s bodies that shoot 20 FPS and have 96mp !  :)

If money wasn't a factor I'd just have everything!

The reply is likely to vary, depending on the type of captures you mostly take (landscape, sports, portrait, ...)

Obviously - if money was a zero point factor in the decision making - you will want the most expensive, and eventually all lenses to have them in stock so you can decide on the spot which one to take :)

More seriously, here is what could be my list

A D810, a D7100 and a D4S

As for the lenses (Nikon only list, in sequence of preference)

24-120/4
14-24/2.8
105/2.8 Micro Nikkor
70-200/2.8
50/1.4
400/2.8
24-70/2.8
85/1.4

As non-Nikkon lenses I would add

Sigma 10-20/3.5
Sigma 50 Art
Tamron 150-600/5-6.3

For the tripod, ligthning and backpacks I am not fixed yet.
However for the tripods there would be multiple tripods (both heavy and lightweight), as well as some monopods for some of the heavier lenses.

Now Santa Claus can come :D

I like Russ' idea :)  but I'd want two of each of the bodies!  One of each lens will do!

Yeah, as long as somebody else is paying.... like the guy in the rental company commercial who throws out his hands and proclaims. "I'll take it all!" LOL

This is actually pretty easy, but I'm surprised that no one has listed the new Nikkor 20mm f/1.8 AFS prime (unless I missed it). I'd like to add that one to what everyone else has mentioned. Also, I've seen only a couple of mentions of the 85mm f/1.4. Guys, even if you don't shoot portraits, you will love this lens... or it's slightly cheaper cousin, the f/1.8. But since money is no object, get it's expensive nano coated brother.

But seriously, I'd be happy with an 810, a D4s, the trinity and the low end nano primes. Toss a couple of speciality lenses in for good measure. Micros, maybe a shift lens since I've never played with one of those. Maybe a really long lens ... but I'm getting to the age where I weigh my bag carefully before venturing out. No more carrying the kitchen sink for this boy if I can help it.

I'm content with my FX DSLR camera and lenses and I've even recently sold off a couple of older primes I've lost interest in using.  My older DX camera and nice zooms work well for my family.  I'll go on a tangent here and say I'd like to see an up-scaled Nikon 1 camera having a DX sensor factor.  My J1 is a fantastic travel camera so how about a DX version with which I could shoot with my 16-85 DX zoom plus that nice 35/1.8 DX prime.  The V2 and V3 with its viewfinder look like they would make nice rangefinder-form DX cameras.

I agree with that...I toured Britain and Paris with a 50 pound plus bag including walking close to 8 miles through Paris carrying that thing on my shoulder back in my 20s...that would NOT be the case now!
