Hi

I currently have a Coolpix L810 which was great to start with. I am starting courses Saturday and wondered if anyone had suggestion to upgrade with a more intermediate model where I can change flash and focus. Budget would be $800, not sure if I can get anything for that price.

You definitely can.  Take a look at the Nikon D3200, it will probably do everything you need and more!

Add a 55-200, 55-300, or 70-300mm lens and it'll fit your budget perfectly :)

Hi Mimi

I have a Nikon D40. I bought it on sale and it came with a 50-200mm plus the standard lens for around $500.00. It has a lot of great features, but is not overwhelming. I have taken some great pictures with it. At this price you could add some other accessories with it (camera bag, filters, etc.) Hope this helped.

I recently upgraded from L810 to Nikon P7700 (now there is P7800 550$).

A nice fully equiped compact, fully manual options and advanced controls - the relatively small size allows me to carry the camera everywhere..This camera (the new P7800) + good tripod + fast card class 10 = 800$ :)

Only problem with a D3200 is that it cant do lossless compressed raw files, It will only take 12 bit compressed RAW. The Jpegs are very good, but RAW files look worse than Jpegs. Bizarre....

If you are doing a photography course you need better than that. Maybe a D7000 (which are on special) or a D7100 if you can stretch your budget..

You need a good RAW camera.

The D3200 is in your price range cracking slr camera for the price, got one myself and i love it.

The 18-55 kit lens that comes with it isn't to bad either taken quite a few shots with it with good results.

If your just starting out with DSLR, I would also go with the 3200. It's a great camera, gives really good quality pictures. Not sure if you'll need RAW files or not but to be honest if your just starting out this will give you everything you need. You can always upgrade to a better camera (7100) if and when you have outgrown the 3200.

For the price you want to pay, it's a no brainer on the 3200 with ket lens(18-55mm) plus a 70-300mm lens should give you a great start to your photography.

keep us updated with your final choice and good luck with the course.

Totally agree, reckon you can pick one up second hand at a reasonable price http://www.amazon.co...&condition=used
