I can recommend Topaz plugins for photoshop/lightroom/etc.  They give you easy access to quick enhancements like noise reduction, BW conversion, and color adjustment that really makes your photos pop.  Of course, if you spend a lot of time in photoshop you'll eventually be able to get a similar result, but Topaz generally speeds things up considerably.

weirdly i just use a basic Photo Editor or 'Gimp' as it gives me options that i need as im not into major editing as my work covers news stories and editors do not like over edited images. however now that im hoping to start getting into other genres like landscaping and night time photography i reckon i will need to look at a more advanced editor..

Big fan of Lightroom - I use it for most of my post-processing. Occasionally use Photoshop Elements to do something I can't in LR - but that's rare. Lots of great programs out there, though - I think you just need to find what works best for you!

Lightroom as well, to convert from RAW to DNG as well as do crop and light adjustments. It is much faster a safe disk space as compared to photoshop individual photos.

Same as me then to be honest not very often LR doesnt do what I need it to do but software is a personal choice! The reason I used Lightroom instead of other software in the beggining was as its a non destructive software it works as well for Jpeg as RAW  let me explain Most softwares will change the original file so everytime you adjust it after the image degrades with Lightroom you always make the changes to the original file so that is never lost more important perhaps if your shooting jpegs

you can download adobe photoshop CS2 for free from the main adobe site.

that being said, its an older version and i am not sure if it can handle older raw formats. i needed CS5 or better for my nikon NEF files.

i only use photoshop (CC currently) for editing photos. Nik software and On One both produce great plug ins but i no longer using them since i find the new raw editor more than sufficient for my process.

At the moment i use CS5 and Lightroom 4..... (still undecided on the CC package as yet) and I also have a dabble with Niks software and OnOne's suite. Had a play with lots of the open/ freebies software out there but it was years ago, so can't really comment on how good or stable they are now....

im loving the CC package. the newest version has the shake reduction filter included. have only used that a couple of times on older images but have completely saved shots i never thought would have any salvage ability. on top of that, i get all the other awesome adobe line up.

I use Photoshop 11. Right now I find it takes care of all of my editing needs. I have looked at Lightroom but decided against it at this time, probably will move to it in the future.
