I use Lightroom with the database and media on an external drive. That gets backed up to two other drives and one of these are kept offsite.

Downloading is made through Lightroom with an external CF reader. The reason for doing it through Lightroom and not manually in Finder is that I change filenames and add IPTC information and keywords when importing. Lightroom works well as a DAM solution, even if I miss Aperture sometimes. For me Lightroom is easier to use for basic edits and batch edits than Aperture, that's why I changed software even though the DAM part was better.

When lighting is difficult I use Colorchecker Passport to profile the light.

Sometimes Lightroom does not do what I want it to, even with the NIK plugins, and then I have to use NX2 if the RAW file just doesn't render well in ACR or CS6 if I have to do some masking to edit just a part of the picture.

For me, I take the SD card from the camera and move them to a folder on the Mac.  I have a specific folder layout that I use.  From there, I import into LR and export to a separate folder structure for "finished" work ready to be uploaded.

All originals are then backed up and moved to an external drive.  I usually keep about two years of completed photos on the Mac, but they are also backed up and moved externally.

Presume that you do not use iphoto then?

Tony why not load the pictures using View NX and then import into LR. LR does not import the full size file....perform your edits then output to a folder as a jpeg. I like LR having used it for the one month trial. I look forward to getting a license since I find it much easier to use then Capture NX. ( the latter program slows my computer ) and I have a lightning fast quad core!

Tony,

No, I don't use iPhoto for my DSLR photos normally.  On rare occasions I will import a processed photo or group of photos so that I can have them available for other uses.  I do use it for other shots and certainly for my iPhone photos.  I use LR for all of my DSLR pix.  However, I do want to learn and try some processing with PhotoMechanic.  I'm told there are some organizations that require it and I've also been told that I will be able to process the photos more quickly.  With the number of photos I deal with on a weekly basis and with a full time job, I'd love to find something that will speed things up.  I could easily double my shooting by hitting other games or events, but just don't have that time available right now.

I also use Lightroom 5 with Nik Collection plugins. Anything I cannot do in Lightroom is finished in Photoshop CC, which is particularly good at removing annoying telephone lines :-)

I use Lightroom  for most of my post-processing. Occasionally use Photoshop to correct some details, for example in the skin (scars, dots) if the client request it.

I use Aperture (Apple product) and NIK filters. Thinking of adding photoshop elements.

I have Lightroom and have learned how to use it by playing around, but need to learn the program better.  Is there a good user book to help learn the program?

I'm running Linux and use Darktable. I'm very new at post-processing but I'm very happy with how I can change my images.

Scott Kelby's The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 Book for Digital Photographers is quite good, if you can stand his style... For the DAM part, Peter Krogh has a new ebook out that is well worth the money.

I just joined the adobe cc and lightroom subscription. Cracking deal. I was using elements but really enjoying the features of lightroom.

It does seem like a good deal. After resisting for awhile (I'd rather buy once instead of having a monthly bill), I recently subscribed as well--I had been using Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS5, and now I'm grateful for the new features and the constant updates.

I really do need to look into CC more...I will at least upgrade to LR5 from my current 4.x but figure I need to check into all my options.  I guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and take the time to decide!

I took the plunge to CC and I love it. Haven't learned Lightroom yet though. Just so used to using camera raw and bridge.

I pretty much only use LR...for a few photo assignments when required, I use Elements, but haven't used it in over a year...well, I haven't used it since I got my Mac which means I will need to get something on here to handle that eventually!

The CC deal is great for those who used to upgrade to every version, they even save some money. I don't like the extra expense seeing that I skipped every other version and have only used the even numbers of CS. I will probably need to upgrade sooner or later, but I hope for later.

I am adamantly against the new CC platform; it's bad for consumers and sets a precedence of dependence on a product you'll never truly own.

I own and still use CS6 but have been migrating much of my workflow over to OnOne's Perfect Suite in preparation to leave the PS platform entirely.

I'm hoping that Pixlr will release it's online Photo Editor (100% free) as a stand alone program. It feels a lot like Photoshop and does a decent job in crafting even complex edits. If you've never tried Pixlr I suggest you take a peek: http://pixlr.com/

Imagine that, on your desktop as an "app", with maybe a little more polish to it and for a reasonable price tag... bye bye Adobe!
