Daniel,
With sports I'm moving around the field quite often in most cases and there generally isn't anything to give any additional support near by. I'd miss quite a number of shots if I was removing the monopod every time I moved. I usually get setup with whatever camera / lens combo (currently that's typically my D4 with 200-400) on the monopod before I head to the field or right after I get to the field. From then on, when I need to move, the camera goes over my shoulder and my hand holds the monopod - either collapsed or open as needed. I effectively have the monopod preset - it is 4 sections and I extend the bottom 2 fully with the third extension already set to be the right height when the other two are extended. Either way it is pretty quick from shoulder to focus. It is a bit different walking through the woods with the setup and it almost has to be collapsed but it seems to work for me. Not suggesting other choices aren't better for others, just qualifying what I do...
Hopefully it will help someone at some point down the road...
