Been a busy bee! This first shot was from a weekend breakaway 'Glamping' (Posh camping for those who don't know.) We stayed in a glorified shed. As the sun was setting I managed to get my boy to come and stand on the steps. Modified in Lightroom to enhance to conrast and increase the atmosphere.

This second shot was from my first proper photoshoot (with people in). My brother in law is selling t-shirts and wanted to get a selection of shots for his new website to promote the range. This one was my personal best.

Here is my submission for the week.  We were driving past this entrance to a building in Cave Creek, AZ, and noticed the old wagon in the rocks behind a saguaro cactus.

D90

A priority, 18-55 lens @ 45mm

1/400 sec 3 f14

I sure am messing up today.  I have tried to post this photo three times.  It seems I just keep hitting the wrong key.

Went out last night with a friend to see if we could get the Milky Way over the Spiral Jetty. Clouds showed up and chased us away before the Milky Way got into a better position, darn it. Lots of noise and light pollution--and a storm camera left…oh well! It was still a fun adventure--I've never been out to the Spiral Jetty before, so that was cool.

I really think I'm going to have to break down and get that 14-24mm...

Oh yes, I recommend the 14-24 over your present lens for astrophotography.  Only your bank account will think it's a bad idea.

Here's my favourite for the week.  My son has just started rowing so plenty of 6.00 am starts.  Oh well, best make some use of that dawn light.

Indeed. I've rented it quite a few times specifically for night sky photography, and it really is the best there is. I've had to quit renting though--one day I happened to check out my rental history with our local camera store, and I have spent FAR too much on rentals. So…until I can afford to buy it, I'm making do with the 24-70. In the meanwhile, I may go get the Rokinon/Bower/Samyang 14mm--I've tried it briefly, and it comes highly recommended by some of the best night sky shooters out there. My next big budget-blowing lens purchase will likely be a 70-200--the longest lens I own is the 105, so right now that's a higher priority than a wider angle.

By the way, your image of the early morning rowing practice is really beautiful...

Well, I had some time this morning that I didn't expect to have, so got far enough through editing my Thursday night shoot to post a couple of pix!

It has been a crazy couple of weeks and it looks like that trend is going to continue for awhile...will fill in some details as we get things sorted out a bit...

TheBird-1956.jpg

D4, 200-400 at 350mm and f4, 1/1250, ISO 12800 - it was like he was begging me to get his photo!

Yes, Thursday I got one more opportunity to "Shoot with the Pros" before the season comes to an end.  I'll post more about it later when I've had time to go through the rest of the MANY photos I shot.  Might take awhile with the fall high school sports starting...and no, all the crazy has nothing to do with my shooting the baseball game although it was a last minute, figure out how to fit it in kind of thing...

One of my friend's critiques of my photos from the last game was that I wasn't using a high enough shutter speed to stop the motion (ball, bat, etc.).  So I did some experimentation shooting at various speeds to see where that sweet spot was.  It appears that 1/3200 does a pretty good job in almost all cases, but 1/4000 is definitely better...I was also pushing the ISO to see what the D4 could handle.  The shot below is cropped heavily as I was at 330mm to photograph the pitcher and didn't have enough time to zoom in before this shot of the short stop throwing the ball to first in the 9th inning.  D4, ISO 12800, f4, 1/4000.

JJHardy-2171.jpg

I think my friend will be happy with that one :)

So, I'm sitting in a campground in NC for the weekend with no cameras (other than my iPhone).  I'm glad I didn't bring them as we have more than enough going on, but there is a beautiful lake with lots of ducks and MANY other things that are reminding me why I (almost :)) always bring one or more cameras along.

I'm going to be shooting all three (Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity) volleyball teams on Tuesday in one of their first games of the season...hopefully I'll be shooting football on Friday as well, so the D4 will be getting a good workout this week and I will end up being happy that I took the weekend off from photography...

IMG_1735.jpg

OK...I did take a few...the one above is our pups making sure the ducks don't come too close to the RV...

Love baseball pics.  Although I'm not an Orioles fan, great pics. You are so fortunate to get on the field access.  Enjoy it.

It's good to see those pesky ducks are being monitored by the wagging patrol.

Deano, officially, those "working" the game are not allowed to wear team items or root for either team. Truth be told, the Os used to be one of my favorite teams, but not much of a fan now...I will root for them on occasion when they are playing less favorite teams...I am much more of a Rays fan than the Os...
