Why wait for a semi-official challenge?

Here is one from me to kick things off:

Dropbox - PES_140716_135450-2_Geijer_and_his_Muse.NEF - Simplify your life

Feel free to edit to your hearts' delight.

Here is my take on the file:

A pseudo-HDR in Photomatix with some careful tonemapping and a Provia 100F overlay.

Awesome!

I went with a warmer feel, adding a bit of dodge & burn to highlight the figures and the sky. Edited out the people in the background. Masked curve adjustments here and there. Total of 5 layers in PS6 with some dynamic contrast and vignetting in Perfect Suite 8.5:

Here is my take on it.  Thought the sky needed some color.

Cloned out the people.  Added a gradient filter to the sky and lightened up the two statues a little.  All done in Lightroom.

Interesting how differently we interpret this raw file. Please mention how you have achieved your result for everyone to better understand the process.

I achieved mine by opening the raw file into Photoshop, duplicating the colored layer, converting the duplicate layer to B&W, then erasing the areas that I wanted the color to show through.   Then I flattened/merged the layers and saved the image to .jpg.

Is there a limit as to how many times we can submit edits?

Something a bit different and perhaps I got carried away!

All mods done in Adobe Lightroom 4.

I wanted to focus of the male statue. So I cropped the image and reduced the exposure by 1 stop, this brought some of the clouds back and allowed me to then use the brush tool to paint in dodge to the highlights and exagerate the effect. For some reason I thought I'd try and paint in some saturation and tweak the temperature and tint to create the coloured effects on the statue - creating something surreal and pastel in nature. Not what I was expecting when I started, but I like it... I think.

Finally I added a gradient at the bottom to generate some more contrast.

Enjoy!

Since Peter said this was more of a fact finding mission than an official contest, I doubt he will be upset with extra entries.

I don't think there is any reason to stifle people's creativity by limiting the edit submissions. There are no rules yet for the coming challenges, but I vote for no limit.

In this, experimental, challenge it is as I said in the first post "Feel free to edit to your hearts' delight."

Lee, as quoted above, feel free...

Thumper,

I looked at doing a B/W & color overlay.  In the end I decided against it, but I like the way yours turned out.

Lee,

I like the effect you got.  Looks like the patina was worn/polished off the front of the front of the jacket area.  Cool effect.

Currently I am limited to use the iPad as technical plateform, which I consider to be a spin-off rather than a production environment. I am not very familiar with the PP editing possibilities it can offer and have therefore opted to start with some of the presets that Snapseed offered and tweaked them for finetuning.

Here is the outcome:

yzy4yveh.jpg

What was the process:

- slightly decrease overall brightness (to get some structure for the sky)
- increase the brightness in shadow areas (mostly to have more detail on the statue)
- apply a vintage filter (this is where I wanted to go)
- add a white frame (to emphasize the vintage look)

Hope this is acceptable for the current post (using iPad apps, rather than state of the art software).

Jerry, the more power to you in achieving the results you want with simple consumer tools rather than my setup of CS6 with a $120 plugin and an overlay that cost me nearly an hour of otherwise billable time to make, even if it was some years ago now...

I went with a B&W conversion.

I used Lightroom 4 and Alien Skin Exposure 4.

In Exposure 4:

-Converted to a split tone, cool platinum black and white

-Boosted midtones and contrast

-Added a yellow filter to further enhance contrast and give better separation in the flowers

In Lightroom 4:

-Fixed the converging verticals, which led to some cropping

-Burned the sky a little after the B&W conversion

-Tweaked sharpness, shadows, and blacks when it was still a color shot

-Used the adjustment brush on the main statue to boost sharpness, exposure, and contrast on him

I'm submitting two--a simple, clean edit and a BW conversion. Great image, Peter. It was fun to work on. I think I need to think more outside the box like some of the previous posters!

gallery_504_491_551993.jpg

gallery_504_491_171250.jpg

Anyhow, I used Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC and Nik Silver Efex.

For the first edit, I just did my usual small bump in clarity, contrast, vibrance, and sharpness in Lightroom. Did a gradient filter with low exposure from both top corners to bring the sky back and brushed on a little bit of extra exposure on the statues' faces.

In Photoshop, did a clean, simple pop by adding a bit more contrast, a gradient spotlight, and midtone boost in curves. Brushed on a bit of punch in the flowers, statues, and text with a layer mask in levels and another layer mask to boost color with the channel mixer (red +150, green -25, blue -25). Somewhere in there I brushed on a little unsharp mask to add a little crispness to the statues.

For the second edit, I started right where the color edit left off and added a filter in Nik Silver Efex Pro--I used the preset no. 5: High Structure (harsh) with selenium toning added. After the filter had been applied, I brushed on a little darkness at the bottom of the image with a layer mask in levels.

I think I need to take better note of what I'm doing next time. I didn't save a PSD file, so I'm trying to recreate my steps from memory. Duh.

EDIT: Thanks, Peter! That was just what I needed. I somehow missed that "Option" button. Thank you, thank you!

Time for me to sum up this trial run.

First, I have to say that it was nice to see how many wanted to take part.

The prize for thinking the most outside the box goes to Mr_Leeman. An interesting idea, well executed.

I liked how Afterimage treated the image to give another feel to it with a warmer tone overall.

My favourite interpretation is Nicole's punchy monochrome, but you did all produce nice, thought-provoking takes on this far from easy raw file.

Thank you!

That was a fun challenge--thanks Peter!

I'm looking forward to seeing this challenge become a regular fixture in the forum. It was so interesting seeing everyone's interpretation.
