Nikonian,

D90, Nikkor 13-300 and 105

shutter 125, 150, 100, 50 tried different setting

iso: 200,

Apature: f10, 12, 13

WB: auto

tripod, remote shutter release

All shots pretty much came out the same, some darker, as expected

I post process in Lightroom 5.5

I set my Picture Control at neutral and/or standard

For this series I shot in raw and .peg fine)

It's the mottling and not quite sharp that bothers me the most.

Thanks,

Rob, brilliant set! So much gorgeousness… Glad you were able to get out and find something beautiful to focus on.

Ignacio, I'm trying to click on your photo to see it bigger (because it looks dang cool!), but it tells me I don't have permission to look at your photo. :(

Dean, did you remember to switch VR off? Your times are in the most sensitive range for VR artefacts on a tripod.

AutoWB can give some strange results for moonshots, Daylight usually works better.

Your exposures seem on the high side, which can give a mottled appearance as the highlights are nearly blown. I would start at 1/160, f/13, ISO 200 and zoom the 18-300 to about 240-260 mm for maximum sharpness and bracket around that setting.

Merco, Yes, I had the VR off while on a tripod.  I learned that from you earlier.  I will try again tonight as the night sky has been very clear, particularly in the morning.  I will adjust the WB to daylight.  I have found thanks to your suggestions that this lens performs better around the 250mm distance.

What about using a 2x tele converter with this lens?  Would this magnify the problem or make the image sharper?  I have never used a converter so their workings are unknown to me.

The TC will just magnify the problems. A converter usually degrades the picture, with a few exceptions where the TC is made to match a certain lens.

Yes, this. I used a 2x on my shot(s), but it most certainly did not enhance any detail on my shots. If anything, it lowered it, especially since I had the focal length at the maximum. And while the 2x works very well with the lens that I was using, I don't know that it was made for that lens specifically. To my understanding, teleconverters degrade detail/sharpness as a general rule, especially at the maximum focal lengths of zoom lenses. I only used it on those shots because I had not used it for a moon shot before, and I wanted to try it out to see what results I could get out of it. Had I have been using a true 400mm lens, the images would have been much sharper. (And that is not to say hat you need a 400mm lens to take moon shots, I just happen to be using that focal length. My point was to clarify that my image would have been sharper had I not have used a teleconverter).

Well, been on the road and finally got the chance to (a) edit and ( B) post from some photos I shot last week.  Long story short, had a chance to take some photos (unofficially) of the Virginia State Little League Majors Softball Tournament.  Unofficially meaning I did not have field or dugout access and since they had hired someone to shoot, I tried to stay out of their way.  A friend's daughter was playing in the tourney so showed up to watch their game and get some photos of their team.  My favorite of our friend's daughter:

I had to include one action - shot through fence from behind home plate:

D600, ISO 800, 70-200 at 195mm, f2.8, 1/2000

I'll try to get something in on time this week depending on how the rest of the travel works out!
