I had a wide angle lens with a bit of fungus on the back element. It really stressed me out because it was a Variable Field Curvature lens which was a pretty expensive animal. Turns out that the fungus didn't make too much difference in the photos... I have no idea why. I really expected worse results. I never had the lens cleaned though so, assuming I could find it, it's probably much worse today.

OK. I do know it has a metal focus ring. I have not seen enough of the front ring to know. Now I just have to receive it . I should have it Saturday.

I know the front element can have a lot of damage and not effect a shot as long as the light is not shining at the lens front element and cause diffraction. I always assumed this was not the case with the rear element. That it needed to be in good shape. I quess I assumed wrong on the rear element.

As for the fungus if it were dead then it should be in the same shape you last saw it in. Alive is a different story. I will make sure the fungus in the lens is dead . At that time I will decide whether or not to remove the element for a cleaning or not . I probably will since I have not had one of these apart yet.

As it has the scalloped focus ring, it is one of the early versions.

If it has a chrome barrel and magnification factors printed in light blue, it is the first, compensating version and should *not* be AI-modified. It is made for use with a handheld meter, rather than TTL metering but it works well with stop-down metering. This version is the sharpest of them all between 1:10 and 1:2 but not stellar at longer distances.

OK. No mod on the lens. I feel like a child with Saturday being Christmas.

Well, this was during the film era. If I took some of the images I made with that lens and digitized them I might be able to see some defects at high magnification.

Good luck with your new lens!
