All of us who use i-TTL or CLS have cursed the dreaded eye-half-closed look the preflash produces.

There is, however, a way to avoid that by separating the preflash from the shutter by assigning FEL (or FV lock in some manuals and menu systems) to either the Func or the Preview button. The setting is found under the Controls heading in the custom menu.

With the button assigned, you can now activate the preflash and hold the button while your subject's eyes open again, and then shoot. This raises the keeper rate to the region of manual flash, but with the convenience of TTL metering.

Wouldn't it just be easier to photoshop their eyes open then trying to clone stamp all that head gear out of the picture?

Problem being I already have my buttons programmed for what I use more often.

On the D300 I have:

  • Shutter half-press set to AE-lock.
  • AF-On activated
  • Preview button set to Fv Lock
  • Fn button set to spot metering
  • AE-L/AF-L set for bracketing
  • Setting for the Preview button as item one in My Menu.

On the D700 that I use a bit differently:

  • Shutter half-press set to AE-lock.
  • AF-On activated
  • Preview button set to Preview
  • Fn button set to spot metering
  • AE-L/AF-L set for Fv lock
  • Setting for the AE-L/AF-L button as item one in My Menu.

The idea is to make it fast to change from Fv lock to whatever I need that button for when not using iTTL or CLS.
