My first post here ... and if all goes well, my last.  :)

I bought my wife a Coolpix S9700.  I've tried to link this camera to her Samsung Galaxy S2.  Neither the camera nor the telephone 'see' each other.

I've downloaded and installed the Nikon wifi utility from the Google App Store and installed it on her phone, but there's no connection between the two devices.  (We live ijn the Netherlands, and Dutch and English are used as languages for the devices.)

I'm sure this is a very simply solution but I don't know how to proceed.  When I open the Wifi Menu for the S9700, I see five wifi options.  The top two are grayed out ... they are Connect to smart device, and Disable Wi-Fi.

I assume this shouldn't make a difference, but I have not yet bought nor installed an expanded memory card.

Will this be resolved in time with a newer firmware ... or am I clueless?

Thanks in advance, Dave Horne

I don't own one so I could check out how it works on mind, so the following are just two questions:

- you say that you didn't install an expanded memory card.
Do you mean that you have no memory card in the slot? (I don't know about the S9700 internal memory, but that is usually (on other lodels) only good for 2-3 pictures and acts more as a buffer)

- if the 'disable Wifi' is grayed out, wouldn't that suggest that Wifi is not on?

Welcome to the forum Dave.

See page 95 of the S9700 manual.

Connect to smart device cannot be selected when no memory card is inserted in the camera.

Also if the battery is low, an eye-fi card is inserted, or it's connected to a TV Computer or printer.

Problem solved!

I installed a memory card (16 GB).  As soon as that card was installed I could click on the option to connect.

The connection between the phone and camera went very quickly and we could see the photos from the camera on the phone.

Perhaps Nikon should mention the fact that a memory card is needed for this wifi feature.

At any rate, problem solved.  Unless I have more issues, I probably won't be back.

Thanks, DH

Chris, this camera only came with a Quick Start Guide.  At any rate, thanks!

I didn't want to lead you guys on and then never call back.  :)

I spend more than enough time in other forums and in this instance I needed some quick information.  Had I taken the time to download and read the complete owner's manual we never would have met.

I personally think this piece of information - that wifi won't work without a memory card - should be included in the Quick Start Guide.

All the best, Dave

My problem is that my Nikon S9600 doesn't recognize my Apple iPad Air2. I've followed all the suggestions on this thread and now with the Nikon mobile utility installed, the iPad immediately recognizes the Nikon S9600. But the camera seems to be waiting for a password while spinning its blocks. When I look  for a way to make a password that option is grayed out.

My question is now: Can I make a direct cabled connection between the two devices? The iPad's port is for Lightning to USB A and of course the Nikon has a female micro-USB.

Could cabling the two together damage the Nikon?

Thanks, Bob

Well, I've worked arI bought my Coolpix, selecting it because (among its other features) it purported to have Wi-Fi. The camera has made two round trips to the authorized repair facility for lens protector issues. And now the Wi-Fi cannot be made to work.

Well, I've worked around the issue by buying the appropriate USB cable for $30. Add that to the $217 I paid for the camera and subtract all the time I have NOT had to learn the camera's features and you find me an extremely dissatisfied, disgruntled (formerly enthusiastic) owner of a Nikon that I see has now been withdrawn from the market.

This Nikon s9700 camera is driving me crazy and I'm frustrated as hell. I cannot connect the WiFi using my iPhone 6 or iPad 2. When I go to my WiFi settings, Nikon is not in the list of networks. I have a memory card and have installed the Nikon wireless mobile utility. I've had this camera for 3 days and already want to toss out the window.

(Solved.  For me at least.)

I was getting the spinning blocks and  "Negotiating connection" issue with my S9700 during wi-fi connection.

I had managed to connect the wi-fi only once in the past, but then never again.

Despite earlier resets of all settings on the camera, it seems that by turning off the Nikon "Eye-Fi" (on by default) in the settings menu (Spanner icon), something changed???

It suddenly started to successfully negotiate a wi-fi connection.

Do note though, that the negotiation is only made once the Nikon app is opened on the device, even if the network has connected (on the device).

The wi-fi even worked again with the "Eye-Fi" setting switched on again afterwards.

I was frustrated like others for a long while, so I hope this helps others!

I just got this Coolpix 9700S from a friend because she could not get it to work and hated it.  I also own a D5100 so I am familar with the Nikon cameras.  I finally got the camera to connect to the wifi but it was not easy.  One thing I did was I made sure the memory card was formatted to Nikon, then it tried to connect and it found the network and it looked like it was going to connect but did not.  Then I said forget network, retried and then reconnected and it work.

I love technology but it should be that hard!

I have the Coolpix S9500 and had a similar problem - grayed our WiFi connection.

The other thing which is critical is that the battery has to be full or nearly so.  If the battery is low - you can't turn on the WiFi.

Discovered by trial and error.

Yeah, I agree - would be nice to take pics and have them automatically go to my phone using the wmu app.  And at a selected resolution.

You can manually view pics on your camera using wmu, and manually download them to your phone.  That will be good enough for this trip I'm taking I suppose.  Clunky.

Have a great day!

Mike
