I agree - no.2 is excellent.

I presume just the glove has to touch the runner?

Yes, he just has to touch him(with either hand),  but he dropped it in the next frame so I suspect the ref didn't call him out.

Fantastic set. I have to agree, #2 is pretty cool.

But the same hand the ball is in, right?

You are right, hand with the ball or the glove containing the ball.

Russ, Kenafein is correct on the rules...however, the umpire initially called the runner out.  He correctly got help from the other umpire and they got the call correct so the runner was safe at third base.  He saw the tag and apparently turned to watch another part of the play without seeing the ball drop.  The other ump saw the ball drop.  I am always impressed with how many of the calls they actually get correct (especially when I have the benefit of reviewing some fixed in time)...I am also always impressed with how poorly they call the game when they make a "bad" call against my kid :)  I always say that I never agree with a coach, umpire or referee 100% of the time, but the good news for them is that their job does not include doing what I want them to!

I was joking with an ump one time earlier this year that he had gotten a call at first base wrong.  I thought the player beat the ball and he saw it another way.  This was awhile after a play that had no impact on the game.  He asked if I had photographic evidence to support my claim.  I did have an image that was not in sufficient focus to "print" or I'd post it, but I brought it up on the LCD screen of my camera.  I showed him the foot was on the base and he pointed to the mitt and said the ball was already in it...We blew up that portion of the first baseman's mitt and you could barely make out a portion of the ball as it was going into the mitt.  He agreed and we had a good laugh about how close it was...

Small amount of baseball trivia for those who care...There are nine defensive positions in baseball...the "gloves" worn by the first baseman and the catcher are referred to as mitts...all other positions they are referred to as gloves...strange, but true...

BTW in reference to #2 and #3 above...funny, but true...

Same two teams, now at the other school's home field about 2 weeks later...

Same runner - also between second and third...this time they got him!  I'll have to come back with these settings as I don't have the info handy...

Cool shots.  I bet these kids are going to treasure these now and even more later in life.

I sure hope they do!  I enjoy doing it and am using it as training for the future...I'm certainly not making enough on the pix to consider it a job even though I do get a few bucks now and then...I also love the access that I've had to be able to capture my boys and their friends.  I know they love the pix based on the amount of inquiries I get on how quickly the pix will be posted...Looking forward to shooting next year at the high school even though both my boys will have moved on...

Gloves, mitts, should harden up and have to use bare hands like cricket! :P
