Hello,

This will be my first Nikon DSLR (previously Canon owner).  Very excited to say the least.  My main question relates to used prices and actuations.  Any thoughts on the following?

Im looking at

D800 (35-40k actuations)

Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens
A 16gb CF card
camera bag

power grip and one battery

$1800

vs

D800 (5k actuations)

2 batts / charger / neck strap /

filter / grip / manual / quick release

and tripod

$2500

I currently own a Nikkor 24mm 2.8 AI Lens / Nikkor 35-70 and 20-210 (all fx lenses of course)

not sure which is the better deal, and apologies if this is the incorret subforum to post said question.... any feedback would be appreciated

I'd probably go with the body with lower mileage.  I know the shutter is rated for 200k shots, but issues can always come up earlier...

It depends on how much you intend to use the camera.  If it is rated for 200K then most likely you can expect to get at least 135K clicks out of it.  Do you think you are likely to take 100K pictures before you decide to upgrade bodies?  If not the shot count probably does not mean a whole lot.

1800 is a pretty sweet deal, especially if that is a Nikon grip.

If I end up being happy with the d800, I dont see myself upgrading/changing bodies.  Both sellers claim cameras are in perfect working condition.  Photography is more of a passion/creative outlet for myself, love the option to print huge that the D800 promises.  Wont be shooting excessively by any means.

You can replace shutters correct?  pretty inexpensively from what i have read

They just released a new framework for the D800.  I would check around and see if anyone has found any issues with third party batteries, grips and lenses.  That grip might be junk if Nikon pulled another evil stealth crippling.

hahah

I should also mention the 35-40k actuation seller has been a royal twat in responding to any questions I have, whereas the 5k actuation seller has been very informative and patient in all my inquiries.

leaning towards the 5k actuation on this one......

I'd probably go with the lower mileage one as well. That package also has more appealing goodies included. (To me).

I have to second (third? forth?) the suggestion to go with the lower milage camera. Buying used is always a crap shoot but odds are the 5k camera will be in better shape overall... including dust from lens changes, etc. And, if the other guy is difficult to talk to now, imagine how he'll be if and when a problem crops up.

Im going to go with the lower mileage.  I leave for Vietnam on June 28th to visit Son Doong Cave

.... extra batteries and tripod are a must, already have a 24mm, 35-70, and 70-210 so the 50mm is just excess at this point.

As tempting as the $1800 deal sounds, I am thinking less risk and long term here.

Thanks for the input and information.  Appreciated!

anyone been to Son Doong yet?  Any suggestions on extra gear for travel and/or protection?

so the 50mm is just excess at this point.

A 50 is never an excess.  The 50/1.8D is such a great lens, and such a bargain.  You should get it at some point in the future. Enjoy your trip!

If you will not be shooting muck, 200K actuations is a long ways away.  You ay 135K actuations left.  If you consider, say 20K actuations a year getting to the limit is about seven years out.
