Hi there,

I am into wildlife photography and need to be able to apply tags as well as ratings to my photos (using 5-star system).

I use ViewNX2 and Capture NX2 and am happy with my workflow.  Ideally I would like to tag my RAW files in ViewNX2 once I've weeded them out,

However what I've discovered is that the RAW tags do not carry over into other programs.  So if I tag in ViewNX2, then search in Explorer or Windows Live Photo Gallery the tags and ratings are not carried over.  Only when I tag JPGs in ViewNX2 can I view them in other programs which doesn't help me.

My biggest fear is that I tag my tens of thousands of photos only to change programs in a year or two (likely, as I have changed programs a few times over the years) and lose all the tagging against my NEF photos.

Likely the one constant will be that I will be on a Windows platform, so does it make sense to add a final stage to my workflow, which would be tagging my NEFs in Windows Live Photo Gallery?  I assume as Windows upgrades, they will continue to produce a similar product that will be able to read Windows tags.  Is that the safest bet?

Thanks so much for any advice.  I really need to get my photos cleaned out and organized :)

Chris

I know nothing about ViewNX2. I edit in Adobe PS and use Bridge to tag (or keyword is its term). If I tag a raw file in Bridge, then create a jpg, the tags are embedded in the jpg. Windows Live Gallery can then search for them using a "text search" I think it calls it. But Live gallery does seem to have a different method for tagging, it seems to categorise things differently, my Bridge tags are just one list to it, whereas it seems to have different lists: people, places etc. (this is all from memory as I don't use it much and I'm not at home).

I'm surprised the tags aren't carried over to the jpegs, can you search for those tags in jpegs in ViewNX just to check?

Yepper... the Tags can be found and modified in the Properties of the image under the Details tab.
