Is it possible to get an app to remotely step through pictures taken when viewing , as this would be useful when viewing on the TV via HDMI cable.

No idea. But if using an HDMI cable you may be able to use your TV remote to step through the pictures as HDMI can send those sort of controls to the camera (but your camera also has to cooperate). If you've got a next or fast forward button on your remote, try it, or try all of them!

Or, you could dump them to a PC / tablet and use an app there to setup / control a slide show...
