A big knife, an obi, and a pagoda.

It's a sport, if you win, if not, it doesn't really matter.

I like the concept, but I think the grass quality lets the shot down.

A big knife, an obi, and a pagoda.

So it's just obi one then.

I know, my yards sucks.   We are in a drought (again).   I will try the shot again from a place.

I was going to say it was a photo...it sounds like you are describing the objects in the photo...

I like your website Russ, very good action shots.

Question: in the photo of the two women playing rugby and one has her hand on the others long braids, trying to pull her backwards, it that a legal move?

What telephoto lens do you use for these shots as it appears you are at least 50-70 meters away.

Thanks.

No not illegal, frowned upon though! If you want to wear your hair like that, then tough!

Up until this year I always used a 70-200/f2.8 with a 1.4x TC attached. Though games under lights I'd have to take off the TC to let more light in. This year I've bought the Sigma 120-300/f2.8 S. I usually use it bare, but have tried it with a Sigma 1.4x TC, and it still performed well. I use both a D300s and a D7100.

A rugby ground is about 100m x 50m, plus an in-goal area at each end, so you're right, I can be that far away from the action quite often.

I agree Russ - same with soccer and lacrosse.  Football really isn't as bad since doesn't normally move as quickly from end to end.  All are played on roughly the same sized field and you will get times where you have to shoot at a fair distance and then crop...or, you put on a TC but possibly miss some of the closer action unless you have a shorter lens mounted on a second body AND the time to switch between them...
