I'm interested in getting ND and grad filters to expand my horizons a bit in terms of landscapes. I have no idea where to start! I like the idea of the square types that attach in front of the camera rather than screw-ons, and I would be interested in a kit of commonly used types. Amazon has some cheap ones but I am not sure about the quality. I'm willing to spend more for better quality. Any suggestions?

Cheap ND grads are a good way of testing what density and how hard a graduation *you* need, especially if you don't need to cover lots of different filter diameters yet. Cokins work, even the cheap ebay knockoffs work, but I personally wouldn't invest in the z-system which is where they become compatible with the rest of the world...
I use a Lindahl 100 mm system with Lee glass filters, but that gets expensive quickly if you can't get something used to start with.

B&W screw-in filters are the best (relatively) inexpensive ND filters that do not change your WB (much.) Cheap ND filters are terrible for color cast and changing WB. That is all I have to give on this topic other than agreeing with Merco_61.
If you want to see what the B&W ND filters can do, go to the "Seascapes Forum" and look at my posts there.
