Any thoughts, suggestions or real-life anecdotes on getting business insurance?

Are there certain types of insurance or certain things we should insure which I may not be considering? Obviously, our gear should be insured. Perhaps some type of protection in case we accidentally damage something in a client's house on a shoot? What else?

You can get coverage for business purposes through most major companies (many of the photographers I know use Farmers or State Farm or something similar). However, you may want to check out PPA.com (Professional Photographers of America). When you join you get some basic coverage. I think you may get similar coverage with ASMP.

Thanks for the information!

Does becoming a PPA member require the certification? What is your view on getting the certification?

No, you don't have to be certified to join PPA. I've been thinking about getting certified just as a personal goal--it's pretty tough to achieve and you've got to know your stuff. I figure that if I get good enough and knowledgeable enough to earn the CPP, I'll be doing pretty well--it wouldn't hurt, you know? But I don't know if it would ultimately help either. I know a couple photographers who put it on their websites as a selling point, but I don't know how many potential clients would really care. Generally what sells you is your work. As I said, for me it would just be a fun personal goal, not something I feel like I need to have to operate my business. Every now and then some of the master photographers around here offer a class and administer the exam. Otherwise I think you've got to go to the ImagingUSA expo to take the exam.

Thanks again for all the info. I ran through the online flash cards at the PPA site and I don't know what else is on the exam but, if the flash cards are any indication, it wouldn't take a great deal of studying to get through it. Perhaps I should go back and try the sample exam before I shove my foot in my mouth.  ^_^

Either way, the PPA membership looks like a good deal.

You also have to submit images to be considered for the CPP designation. It's been a couple years since I've looked into the CPP exam...maybe I'd be less intimidated nowadays. :) I don't know--maybe not.
