Thinking of going to Alaska at the end of April to try and photograph the Grizzly. Anyone know of a location there where I could see this bear and that's drivable?

I know nothing about where to find grizzlies in Alaska but may I just say that I am insanely jealous!!!!!!! I would dearly love to go to Alaska (not on a cruise ship!).

In April, eh? How long will they have been out of hibernation? Be careful--hungry bears can be grumpy. :)

Last fall along the Alaska highway going through British Columbia, Canada I met some interesting people. One guy I met while photographing a Grizzly told me he was from Germany and that he comes up there ever year. He said some where near the Haines highway in Alaska a lot of Grizzly's come down to feed after there hibernation and that it is an excellent place to photograph Grizzly's. Not sure where it is but I want to go there. I meet a lot of people while out photographing and some have asked if I had a website or business card, so this year I am going to make up some cards and bring them along. One woman along the way told I met told me about a place called Salmon Glacier and that I had to drive through Hyder, Alaska to get there and back into Canada.

Did you make it to Alaska?

I lived in Fairbanks for 3 years back in the 70's That is one beautiful and big state.  I tried to avoid grizzlies

I managed to photograph them in Denali National Park a couple of years back. Only issue was that I was on an organised tour, so stopping and getting off the bus was not really an option - the bus literally just pulled over and you had to shoot out of the windows. It is possible to do private visits to the Park so you would have the freedom of movement required, however, Bears are not really an animal a UK resident like me has much knowledge or experience of so I personally would be very nervous about going out and sharing its playground! So using a public tour was probably the best option for me without a local guide.
