Posting some pix of baseball from this past weekend.

First off as discussed in another topic, when shooting college ball, I'm mostly outside of the fence around the field.  That works OK at some fields and not well at all on other fields.  This was my first time to this field and it was about middle of the road as far as shooting from outside the fence.  Here's the best spot I found for shooting (taken with my iPhone):

IMG 0436

It isn't bad for looking out at most of the field, but shooting down towards home plate for batters or the catcher (or plays at the plate) was really tough as you can tell from the second shot.  If you look at the second shot, the orange jersey to the right of the frame is a batter at home plate.  The catcher and umpire are also there if you look closely.  For those who have never tried to shoot through a fence, with a long lens, if you get close enough to the fence, you basically won't see the fence in the final image.  But shooting towards the plate, while you didn't see the fence, you got what appears to be a foggy image...

To be fair to the field, I could have moved around a bit and gotten some other angles, but these are for me as well as the young men out on the field - not for an assignment, so I chose to shoot what I could and enjoy the beautiful 70+F weather of the day, watching my son play a game he loves.  I also know I'm shooting several more games where I'll have the opportunity to shoot without the fence with better angles.

So, here are some shots:

1.
Safe or Out?

The one sliding into 3rd is my son, so I was really happy to get this shot.  Unfortunately, the umpire called him out.  I was well behaved even though I disagree with the call - mostly because the umpire was out of position, behind my son (outside of the frame) where he really couldn't see the tag.  But those things happen!

4.
Pitcher Close Up

5.

6.
Lefty Pitcher

7.
Throw Home

This throw from left field to home plate got there in time for the catcher to tag out the potential winning run in the last inning of a tied game.  They eventually one the game.

8.
Celebration

The celebration after the throw to home saved the game.

9.
Pitcher Release

I'll add some comments after I see which is which :)

Great action, it's tricky to swivel and fire sometimes, esp. if you're behind a fence. Nice tongue action by your son!! :P

Love the arm in 6 too - I'm always amazed at these shots how flexible the arms are.

No batter shots scoring a homer?

There must be a way to post those without us having to click on them, lazy I know, but...

I like the way you caught the action in 5 and 8.

Yea - will try a different method of posting next time...I just put them in my gallery and then linked them into the presentation this time...

Actually, there were no homers hit by either team in any of the 3 games over the weekend...I expect that will change down the road as the weather and the players warm up...

Awesome series!! You really capture the action well. I can't pick a favorite out of those. Very well done.

Some more pix from last weekend's games...shot 3 of the 4 games - watched game 4 in the rain, deciding I had enough for the weekend and not wanting to mess with the camera rain gear...

I like the action captured in your shots, especially the guys on no.6. (But also 2, 5, 9 and 1)
What was the shutter speed for no.7?

I believe all of these are shot at 1/2000 at f4.  Don't have the info handy right now but will confirm and update...kind of amazing how fast that ball is moving when 1/2000 doesn't fully stop it  :)

Checked:  The shot of the catcher (#6) is at ISO 360, 200mm, f4, 1/2000

ISO might vary on the others and all were with my 200-400 Zoom but f4 and 1/2000 should be valid for all...

Excellent set. You always do such a fantastic job of capturing the action. (5 & 6 are my favorites).

Great shots, all of them.

The two guys in the last photo, my son on the right, have played baseball with and against each other since they were 9 or 10 and this was their first time playing against each other in college.  Kinda fun having a cold beer with them after the game (and the other guy's dad too)!

Now that is just cool.

Is your son's buddy really taking a pitch to the hip in #6?

Oooowwwww, I'll bet that left a mark.  (Great captures).  That's the kind of sports shots that I like, the ones that capture expressions and moments like that.

And the one of the dust coming out of the catcher's mitt is cool too.   You know exactly what is going on there, and you can almost hear it.
