most of the time i use M, just for that feel and sense of achievement, i don't know.

But when I'm taking happy snaps around town its on M, For a lot of serious Party work its on P just due to the constant changing lights and conditions.

Ian, what processing mode did you have set in the camera? Changing mode will change the preview but if you don't use CaptureNX it will be discarded in the raw conversion.

I agree...another reason JPG might be a good choice if you are experimenting...once you find something / some settings you like, then try the same in RAW...

Also remember that if you try to bring back exposure in pp it will introduce new noise. Better to get proper exposure in the first place than extra noise you wouldn't have had anyway. At least in your case it was not on important shots though.

I am new to this thread and the forums. I'm just getting back into picture taking as well. I haven't done anything really in 20 years (literally!). My Minolta XG-S broke 20 years ago and I never got it repaired. Everything was manual on that thing, including film advancing. Haha

I use auto on everything (amazing how much you forget in 20 years - everything!). I have just started using manual focus to change things. I'm working on transitioning to M because I like to really play with depth of field and motion. You guys are 20 years ahead of me. Now I just need to get my D5100 fixed.

Here is a pic I took of my wife and her son and my two boys at Ft. McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. I used photoshop for effect.
