Russ suggested that he wouldn't want the pressure of shooting the Olympics in another thread - at least not as a job.  That got me to thinking about what photo job I'd want if I were offered my choice of jobs.  We all have goals and "bucket lists" and dream jobs or assignments.  What is your dream photo assignment or job? I'm guessing some of the folks out there have lived their dream assignment and some are trying to...

Note: this is open for those not even interested in making money from their photos...in that case, given the opportunity, what is the one "thing" (trip, event, item, animal, sport, etc.) you have dreamed of shooting...

An example from my past...from the time I was in high school, I always dreamed of getting the opportunity to be on the field with the opportunity to shoot an NFL game.  In the early 90s, I finally got the chance and have done it a few times.  I really enjoyed it and I do hope I get the opportunity to do it again - frequently :) but we have to move forward, so I'm working on achieving new dreams now...

I'm really not looking for the "photographer for adult magazine" kind of thing although I'm sure it is a worthy goal for some and a dream job for others...but I am thinking it will be something that isn't within your normal photographic world...

So, for those looking towards photography as a career, what's your dream job or assignment?

For the hobbyist, what is the photo subject at the top of your bucket list?

Please include - which question you are answering and, if you can, tell us what is it about the subject that draws you to want to photograph it...

To get paid for photographs of my bedroom ceiling!    No?

I enjoy sports photography. I've read those articles about photographers at the Olympics, I've got to know a few local sports photo pros, it just doesn't look like fun any more. I'm told I'm a fairly laid-back kinda fella, so that's not for me. So I don't actually have a dream assignment, if people would just buy lots of what i already do I'd be happy.

My dream assignment would be to document something like "Twin city week" with visiting politicians, cultural workers  and youth choirs from Uppsala's twin cities in all the Nordic countries.

Such an assignment would be stressful, but rewarding. I have done part of this once, when I shot the choir practises and it was interesting to try to capture, in still images, the interaction between the young singers as they began to see the similarities instead of the differences between their different cities, countries and cultures.

My dream gig would be travel photographer for whatever publisher would pay for plane tickets. :)

And I could photograph cowboys, ranchers, and farmers forever. Real cowboys--not those pretend Jackson Hole cowboys who wear thousand dollar hats and buy the expensive cowboy fashion advertised in that phony Cowboys & Indians magazine.

Bucket list is underwater photography…in the Caribbean.

I am not a professional photographer, but if I were, my dream job would be with either National Geographic (where ever they wanted to send me) or as a sports photographer. Horse races, Gran Prix motorcycle races, aerial snowboarding, speed skating, etc.

I saw this thread and was actually going to say "National Geographic photographer" but since Thumper already claimed it, he can have all of the sports assignments (as per his request) and I will take anything else NAT-GEO would care to send my way!

All are great choices!  Probably not a surprise, but I would have to choose sports photography...to be more specific, I'd like to shoot Major League Baseball - chosen in part because of the season!  I love shooting football and other sports, but I would much rather be photographing a nice sunny afternoon baseball game in a hot climate (from a personal standpoint) than an NFL game in a cold climate late in the season!  In reality, I think I'd get bored shooting any single sport as my only job.  It would probably be more fun to shoot sports for a major university where I'd have the opportunity to shoot all of their sports - both indoor and outdoor.  Having shot at all levels (t-ball through MLB as an example with baseball) in multiple sports, there are different emotions at each level.  All are interesting to photograph for various reasons, but I love everything about the college level.  The talent isn't necessarily at the pro level, but it is as close as it gets and the emotions seem to be at a higher level with the college players.  Higher isn't quite the right word - different is probably a better word.  College has more of a fan base (student, alumni, family and local fans) than do high schools and it seems to have both players and fans who are more invested in their team than most professional teams.  So, how about a sports photographer for a major university in the south east where its fairly warm year 'round!  That would work for me!

Other than that, I think I'd shoot for travel / nature.  Back in the day, I think I would have jumped at a NatGeo job, but I don't need that much adventure anymore!  Instead, I would love to spend a few years traveling the US in our RV doing travel and nature photography - taking a break from the RV when I'm on the west coast to head over and shoot Hawaii!  I think we'd need a bigger RV to hold my gear though!  I would want several more pretty big lenses and a few more small lenses if I was going to do nature shooting across the country.

So now my future is planned out - retire from my current job in a few years, travel the country for a few years with lots of gear and then settle down near a college and shoot all of their sports until I decide to just hang out and fish the rest of my life!  I welcome any offers of financing the equipment and travel and will work on the colleges while I'm on the road!

Not sure. I am a non-creative follow the rules kind of guy. (I am an accountant by profession), so the idea of having to rely on creativity and an artistic eye scares me. That being said, I think I would want something that allowed me to travel (mostly in US, but some abroad as well). Also something that allowed me to tie in my other hobbies as well. Maybe a photographer for Guns & Ammo or one of the other shooting/hunting magazines.
