The old jpeg2000, which was later renamed to jpeg HD or something, was also better than the ordinary jpegs we use today, but for some reason never caught on. It would be nice if this did catch on and all camera-makers used it, but don't hold your breath (unless you have a Pentax that is, they were nice enough to let their cameras use the Adobe DNG raw format natively, so maybe they will use this in the future).

First, JPEG is governed by ISO and ITU, not the Independent JPEG group. libjpeg is in widespread use, though.
The original press release is here. Digitaltrends and most others use an article at the Phoblographer as their source.
It can't compete with raw formats because it will still lock in white balance and will be de-bayered.

No, don't expect it can compete with raw, but after all these years it's somewhat surprising that we still use the old-fashioned jpeg. Surely we should be using something for viewing and sharing photos by now that has better integrity with more information intact than that.

The trouble with new codecs and standards is getting them to work predictably in all software, how long did it take Microsoft to show transparent PNGs correctly in IE?
Try saving the same file with sRGB, AdobeRGB and ProPhotoRGB assigned and opening in something earlier or other than the latest versions of IE, Firefox, Opera, Chrome or Safari... This exercise gives a hint of the troubles waiting when you go to a new codec.
