I recently got my D7100 back from Nikon repair (the auto-focus had stopped working).  The auto focus is now working, better when I take shots indoors, but not-so-much outdoors.  My main subject matter is birds.   I've shot 3000 outdoor photos in the last two weeks, and maybe got 20 pics that were just ok.  These few pics are still off and lack sharp details.  All the others are so blurry I'm getting a headache looking at them.  The indoor photos are better, but still not all perfect.  I even tried some test photos of a focus calibration form, they seemed much better.  I've also noticed a marked difference between photos taken in aperture priority and program modes.  The program mode shots are slightly clearer.

I talked with Nikon and they asked me to send some photos in.  And now I wait for an answer.....

In the mean time - I thought I'd look for some input from my friends here in the Nikon Forums.

Specs - D7100, 300mm f2/8, mounted on a tri-pod

Thanks for your expertise and input!!!

Jackie

I also have a D7100, but lack the expertise and knowledge to provide you with any adivce. However, look forward to hearing feedback from others.

See my thread below (D7100 not as sharp as D5100?). I wonder if this is a problem with the camera, and I certainly hope it isn't. That would be disappointing.

Do you get the same problem with different lenses? And if you have, do they show the same blur characteristics - ie the focus seems to be in front or behind the intended focal point.

It's always hard to tell whether or not it's user-error, but my D7100 takes great shots and I've no problems with the focus. Your test chart looks good focus.

As above, is it only with that lens, different lenses...  ?

What happens if you slow down the lens? Have you tried @ f/4, f/5.6, f/8 ? What about Live View? (LV uses different AF method and usually works ok).

Other thing is to do BF/FF test - maybe AF it needs adjusting (built-in feature in D7100).

Let us know.

The focus issue is a problem with all three of my lenses.  It just seems so strange that the camera won't focus outside, and so inconsistently.  I sure hope I hear back from Nikon tomorrow!

Hi there.   It looks like it wouldn't focus on a remote object, i.e. it is the distance not the available light which is the problem.   I'd try focusing with your 300mm lens on a tree or a house about 30 meters away. If the camera confirms that it is in focus but the image is blurred, a repair is likely in order.   Otherwise, if it cannot focus on moving objects, make sure you are using a 51 point focus not a single point one. Also if the camera is in a scene mode like "flowers", it will prioritize short focusing distances (ala Macro) and it will force the single point autofocus mode.

Finally spoke with someone at Nikon.  After trouble shooting with me over the phone, we both agreed the camera needs to be sent back and looked over again.  Hope they get it right this time!

Thanks for your responses here at Nikon Forums!!

What is result for it?
I have same focus problem with my d7100 and 85mm/1.8G, 105mm/2.8G lenses.
- outside under strong sun, camera have strong front focus
- outside under trees in shadow, focusing is better
- inside in buildings is all ok
Focusing system in D7100 is sensitive for light intensity? or light temperature?

How to fix it?

thx
