I have been saving for some time for a zoom some where in the 70-200 range but came across the new 80-400 . I mainly shoot indoor events low light work so my 24-70 tamron 2.8 does most of the work Ihave a 105mm 2.0 if I need to come in closer on my back up body d7000 .

Does any one here have both would the 80-400 be an good alternative to the faster 70-200 2.8 on my D600 I would mainly be using this lens for out door events

Cheers Mark

I had the 80-400 (earlier version) and sold it for the 70-200.  That said, I liked the lens and got some great photos with it.  Indoors or outdoors at night the aperture made it hard to use for sports which is what I shoot most of the time...It was the right choice for me at the time, but if I were making the decision now, I'd probably go with the 70-200 and one of the teleconverters if you think you need more reach...For indoor, I'd throw the 70-200 on the D600 and the 24-70 on the D7000...for outdoor without a TC, I might swap them too get a bit more reach...All 4 of the shots below were taken with my 80-400 and my former D90...

Hitter
ISO 3200, 102mm, f4.8, 1/250
Grounder
ISO 400, 250mm, f5.3, 1/1000
Thrown
ISO 400, 220mm, f5.3, 1/1600
Throwing
ISO 400, 220mm, f5.3, 1/1600

I edited to include the shot info...another thing to consider is the bokeh...obviously you won't get the same bokeh from the higher aperture as you will from the 2.8...

Indoors you will want the faster aperture lens, so the 70-200 it is. The latest 80-400 is very capable, but doesn't open up to f2.8.

you could go the middle ground and go with 300mm f-4 prime. with a 1.4x teleconvertor it would get you 420mm.
