Hi, I have been looking into this recently and wondered if anyone here makes a living or at least earns some pocket money by selling via stock websites, the likes of iStockphoto, Alamy, Fotolibra etc.

Under no illusion how hard it would be to get into this but people do it  :D

What are your thoughts?

Ian.

I'm curious about this too. I have no idea how it's done.

Hi, there is a really good section in this Digital SLR Photography MagBook about doing this very thing.  Worth a read.  In fact, the whole mag has some good tips etc.

You need to have really decent pictures to earn money on stock sites. My friend sells them on one of the stock sites and he is doing very well (he is doing it as full time job), but he pays models, for studio hire or special locations (dentists, opticians, car mechanics, offices etc.), furniture, equipment and other stuff. His main subject are photos of professional people. Often budget of £1000 per session is not enough if involves specialist equipment and 4-5 models - it's a lot of money, so you need to have proper material to sell it well and many times. Other thing are criteria that you need to comply with - top image quality, usually ISO max 200, stay away from registered trademarks (even little logo of manufacturer on equipment will disqualify your pictures) and you need to get through "judges" who will (or not) approve your images.

Cheers Serge, that pretty much seems to be the acceptance criteria to most sites i have looked at.  Personal circumstances are dictating a life change including employment and to take a hobby i am passionate about in that direction really appeals to me, and scares me  :)

Well, that is the 1st step done. iStockPhoto have just approved my 3 application submissions as technically and commercially acceptable.......  Now to sit back and let the millions roll in, ha ha ha.
