I don't know where else to post this random bit of info…but I am quite thrilled at the moment. I just found out I did indeed make it into Don Giannatti's Project 52 Pros group, which means a lot of things:

  • For a whole year, I get weekly assignments, instruction, and feedback in commercial photography from Mr. Giannatti himself (he is a wonderful commercial photographer with years of experience and many published works--he's a good writer too)
  • I get free access to some of his lighting courses on Udemy.com
  • I have to (get to :) ) buy some of the gear I've had my eye on lately
  • I'll be forced to stretch my photography skills and creativity

I am most excited about getting critiques from him. And the stretching part.

(And I should probably clarify--"getting in" was a matter of being quick enough to snag one of the few available spaces--it wasn't an audition process.)

Congratulations!

It sounds like a great opportunity to, as you said, stretch and develop as a photographer.

That's awesome. A little tutoring by a top photographer could never hurt!

I'm confused about what this Pro 52 group is all about.  It's like an online course?

Here's a link that can explain it better than I can:

DZ½ÁÃÕÖµç×ӿƼ¼ÓÐÏÞ¹«Ë¾

So every week we're given real-world commercial assignments, some technical help, and critiques from an established and respected pro.

I became aware of Don Giannatti when he taught a lighting course on CreativeLive a year or so ago. He's old school (but fully embraces the new as far as I can tell), which really appeals to me. As I said, I'm especially looking forward to feedback from him, which is done via a live go-to-meeting gathering once a week. All online, yes. And ridiculously cheap for what we are getting.

I does seem fun, motivational, and at a very reasonable price.

Oh, and here's a video of projects in review from a woman who is just completing the project 52 for this year.

She is good!

Yeah, the price is right. I figured that I've spent twice the amount this year-long project will cost on mere three-day workshops, so yes, it's reasonable.

Plain and simple: the more you shoot, the more experienced you get.

Congrats and I look forward to seeing some of your images and hearing about your experiences.  I looked at the site and it does sound like an interesting project.  I'm adding it to my list of "training" to consider down the road.  Not a chance that I can do anything so extensive this year, but I'm hoping the following year or two will allow me sufficient time to expand my skills.  By that I mean doing some more demanding class like this rather than just practice, experimentation and a few short duration forms of training.

100% yes!!! You are so right.

I'm hoping for some experience in a specific direction with specific tools I haven't learned yet (lighting mostly)--I've been feeling a bit stagnant lately, so perhaps this will be a good kick in the pants for me. I have a tendency to think a lot about what I would like to accomplish photographically, but I often let life get in the way and do very little of it. Deadlines tend to motivate me. :) And I'm curious to see if I can fulfill some of the more abstract assignments he gives--wondering just how creative I can be. I don't know if I would be as good at giving myself the same kinds of assignments.

Thanks, everyone, for your encouragement. Sportz2Pix, I'll keep you posted on how I feel about my investment as I go.

And K-9, you've just given me an idea for another thread. Nothing like shooting often to boost your skills--I'd be curious to see where everyone "started" and where they are now. Kind of a "before/after" thread...

Congratulations Nicole and as usual your great enthusiasm and passion for photography is clearly evident. Guess that with work, family and this project your time on this forum will be limited. I only hope you are able to pop into the forum and update us on how your photography develops during the year. Perhaps you can also drip feed us useful tips or bits of knowledge you pick up on your journey. Also want to see some of your images!

Wow this course looks cool and I want to sign up. Can anyone sign up or do you have to be a professional?

Thanks, Tony. :)

Daniel, you don't have to be a pro to get in (I'm not a pro). He only does one group a year I think (if I remember right, he used to start one in July as well; maybe keep your eyes open for that). I think this year's group is full, but you could always try to get in. Assignments and such don't start until February, so it may be worth trying.

Is it expensive?

Not at all. It's $25 per month for a year (plus a one-time $20 registration fee). I've spent more than twice that total amount for three-day workshops, so it seems very inexpensive to me.

That sounds quite reasonable for what you are getting!
