Flying blind is not easy.

FX or DX? What is the budget?

On FX the 85/1.4 is probably the best studio portrait lens. On DX it is too long and would require an enormous studio and make you lose the necessary contact with the kids. In that case a 50/1.8 is probably better.

Outdoors a 50 or a 35 on FX work well for group shots. On DX a 24 or 35 is about equivalent.

Zooms are very useful for environmental portraits of children, and the 24-70/2.8 for FX use or the 17-55/2.8 for DX are probably the best you can get.

Your profile shows a D3100, so you would want to follow the DX suggestions above.  I will say that the 24-70 listed above works great with either FX or DX bodies and is an excellent all around lens.

What lenses do you already have and what is it that you want to shoot that they won't handle?  Most folks start out with a kit lens which may already take care of most of your requirements.
