The Z9 is, in my opinion, a bargain at what Nikon is selling it for. And, given a choice, I would easily pick the Z9 over the Z8. But, photographers... and other people with lots of disposable cash to burn through, just have to have the latest bling. For the moment, that bling is the Nikon Z8.

I agree, the Z9 is a bargain but the Z8 is the spiritual successor to the awesome D850 and that alone will sell cameras. Also, for the things that matter to most of us, the Z8 will do everything the Z9 will do.

Personally, I’d take the Z9 for choice but I’d be  more than happy with a Z8. As it is, I can’t afford either of them!

I'm in no way knocking the Z8. I'd love to have one... just make sure the strap eyelet post is firmly attached. But, given a choice, it would be no contest. Of course, I don't have the cash to spurge on either of them so the point is moot. In fact, I would love to have a good copy of the D4 that Lupe uses. I would be totally content.

Yes, the eyelet thing would be a bit of a concern :D I’m sure they’ll all be fixed in ten years time when I can afford one!

I too would love a D4. I’ve always liked that sensor and I love the full-sized pro-Nikon cameras handling. I did look at the D4 on eBay and others but they’re still too expensive for me. My recently acquired Canon EOS 7D was £200 with a 50mm lens, battery grip and CF card. It’s really tidy too. Difficult to argue with that!

The Z9 is not priced like all flagships ever.

If we compare it to the D3, the $5000 on introduction would be $7000 today based on inflation.
The F4 was $2000 on introduction in 1988, which would be $5300 today.

The F5 was $3100 in 1996, which would be $ 6000 today.

The D4 was $6000 in 2012, which would be $ 8000 today.

The D5 was $6500 in 2016, which would be $8300 today.

This makes the Z9 a bargain, even if it costs a LOT of money.

Nikon D6 was US$6,499.95 in 2020 which would be checking the store still there. :P

The Nikon Z9 has a flagship price, no more, no less.

Nikon Z8 has PRO price like D800, D810, D850.

Both are more expensive than Sony and Japaneses prefer Nikon, turning tables .... maybe....

John, I just bought a second hand Nikon D3 for £220 about 250 Euro.

The Z8 is in the same ballpark as every FX prosumer body since the D700 when old prices are adjusted for inflation, which is to be expected. The Z9 is cheaper than the FX single-digits, even without accounting for inflation.

The Sony A1 is still $6800 with the grip, so quite a bit more expensive than the Z9.

The A7 R V is $4000 at B&H, the same price as the Z8.

Yeah, I saw that, it’s a good price. There are plenty for sale here but nothing worth having under £300-350. And then I’d still have had to buy a lens. The best Nikon I could find in my budget was a D300 for £255 and again, no lens. The 7D was definitely the best deal around and it was only 10 miles away, so I could go look at it.

The Z9 is £5300 in UK, the Sony A1 is £6500. The Canon EOS1 DX Mkiii is still £7k!!! Nikon have priced the Z9 very cheaply and the Z8 will do almost everything the Z9 will for £3500.

For some reason, Japanese consumers have always -- as a rule -- preferred Nikon cameras. I think perhaps it has to do with Nikon's history but that's just a guess. In any case, Nikon has a hit with both the Z9 and Z8 (provided they can quickly fix their quality control issues with the latter).

Interesting thing about the Z9 versus the Z8. One of the reasons why I would choose the Z9 over the Z8 has to do, with of all things, size. The Z9 is larger than the Z8 ... got those big batteries ya know. But if you add a grip (which I would) to the Z8 it then becomes a considerably larger camera than the Z9. Go figure!

I almost wish now that I had bought the refurb D6 (I believe it was) that Nikon was trying to sell me for $2000US awhile back.

--Ron

Edit: I seemed to have been comparing the Z8 to itself in the first sentence of my second paragraph. Argh!

I believe the preference for Nikon is a matter of brand loyalty. The Nikomats were tremendous value for money with a heft and quality feel that was much closer to the pro cameras of the day. This made lots of Japanese buy Nikon as a family camera. The domestic price was much lower than the export pricing, which was another factor. A third factor is the presence of Nippon in the brand names...

Yeah, sounds reasonable. When I was first considering a "serious" film camera, it was suggested to me by more than one working photographer, that -- if I couldn't afford an F -- go for a  Nikomat. Same quality plus all those lovely Nikkor lenses to choose from.

And, the Japanese have historically been fiercely nationalistic so anything with Nippon in the brand name should be popular with Japanese consumers.

Yeah, it was either a D5 or a D6. Either way, it would be a good deal. Nikon refurbished with a warranty.
