Hi folks, I am new to this forum and new to forums in general so it will take a while for me to find my feet. I live in Melbourne, Australia and I have been taking photos for over 50 years. I am a keen wildlife and landscape photographer. I have had a long list if cameras, starting with a rollei 35, to numerous pentax cameras and since the mid 90's a range of Nikon gear. I have sold off a lot of gear in the last 2 years, I had 2 bodies,6 lenses and lots of accessories but I decided to cull. I have a d800, 24-120 f4 af-s vr and a 300 af-s pf vr plus 1.7 x tc. I have some specific questions re the d800 and the 300mm lens which I hope to get some answers on

Only just seen this post, so hello & welcome.

I read your other post about the 300m lens, but I haven't got one so can't make any useful coments.

Look forward to seeing some of your pictures.

Thanks. So I bit the bullet, I have sold my 300mm pf lens and replaced it with a 200-500 nikon f5.6 instead. So far it has been a great move. The results are what I expected to get, much cleaner, even hand held.my gues is that the 300 pf is so light weight that the d800 shutter slap is causing slight blurring? I can get better results with the 300 on a tripod with mirror up hut the whole reason for buying the 300 was portability and hand holding it.

I have an old MF lens Nikon 300mm f/4.5 NIKKOR AI-s, I can't shoot birds too fast for me, but for astrology photo and night and plane spotting or spy the park in front of my home for that it works very well :P

And I can carry at hand without tripod or unipod, now it's a cheap lens and the quality it's awesome.

I think you are right. Light, long lenses don’t play that well on the D800 or D810. They are very nice on a D700, D850 or D500, though. IME, they work better on the D800 if you have the grip and large battery. The extra mass seem to make for less resonance from the mirror slap.

I have a battery grip but I didn't think of using it! I have already tried out my 200-500 and I am suitably impressed. It certainly adds mass to the equation.

I know this lens, I had one a few years ago. And it was very sharp. I need to spend more time taking photos and less time buying and selling gear.
