Hi andTIA

I borrowed a Nikon D7000, I downloaded the photos from the disk to my pc.

Now I want to put them back on.  I copied them back to the disk, and they are readable on my PC, but the camera doesn't  recognise them.

Any ideas how I can get them back ?

Thanks for any help.

Did you edit them in any way?

Did you put them back in exactly the same place?

Why do you want to do this?

Hi Nikonian, thanks for replying,

I didn't edit them at all.

I did need to download them onto 2 separate DVD's so had to make 2 folders which I named after my friend.

At first I tried to put them back in these folders - no good

Then I put them in DCIM - no good

Then I took a pic and looked where the camera stored it.  This was in a folder called 100D7000, so I added them to there - no good.

I noticed that all the files that the computer made were named (something like) DCIM_001, DCIM_002 etc, whereas all the files I had were named just 001, 002 etc.  So I tried renaming one of the files to the DCIM style name - no good.

That's all I have tried.

As for why, thats a tough question.  I copied the files onto DVD's and a USB memorystick as a double backup, and I didn't expect  to put them back, partricularly as she had used up 7GB of the 8GB SD card in the camera.

However, I said that it would be easy to put them back if she wanted, and she said that she did.

Since then, I have told her that putting them back was not as easy as I thought, and that although there are millions of videos and explanations of how to remove them from the camera, there aren't any that show you how to put them back.

I explained that most people want to free up the space on the camera, and be able to view them easily on the TV or PC in a slideshow.

To be fair she seems quite happy to have the photos on backup storage and have the diskspace free on the camea, so it's not really an urgent problem.  Really we have got to the stage where I want to understand where I am going wrong, or where I went wrong when I moved them off the camera.

Thanks again

Forgive me if you explained this, but downloading photos from an SD card to a computer does not remove those photos from the SD card. It's a copy operation... not a move operation. You would have to purposely delete those photos or format the card in order for those pictures to not still be on the card.

Having said that, it's possible that in trying to add them back after copying them, the file allocation table may have become corrupt. In which case, you would need special software running on a PC or Mac to fix.

Hi Ron, thanks for the reply.

When I started, I was under the impression that my friend wanted the SD disk emptying, so I moved the files to my laptop.  I didn't do a "download", I just dragged the files from the SD to a folder on the laptop and chose "Move Here"  I didn't check at the time whether my PC could still read the files on the SD Disk after the "Move".  Certainly since the "Copy" back the SD files can be read on the PC but not via the camera.

What Is the software that I need, and is it freeware?

I saw there was some Nikon software that used to be free but has now been discontinued.

If we reformat the disk, will we need the software to reset the allocation table ?

Thanks again,

Sarge

If you choose to format the card, which should always be done in the camera, you won't need any additional software at all. Rebuilding the FAT table is part of the format process.

The only time you would need special software is if you're still intent on accessing pictures already on the card. In that case, your choice of software would depend on the brand of SD card you're working with. Each brand has their own emergency software for the purpose of repairing a card or at least allowing you to save it's contents. Some brands offer this software free or charge, at least for a certain length of time. Others may charge a fee to use it. There are also, I believe, some shareware or commercial programs that profess to work with all, or many, brands of SD cards. There may also be freeware programs available for this task but, if so, I have no knowledge of them.

If you've been successful in transferring all the pictures to another medium (hard disk, jump drive, etc.) I would move on with this card. Either format it and use it like a new card, or retire it and purchase another card to use.

Thanks everyone, my friend is happy with her camera situation now.  Is it necessary to mark this thread as solved ?

Not necessary. We don’t usually use that convention.

It is, however, good that we could be of any help.
