Can anyone inform me of a way to determine a gray-market import from the real Nikon-built Japanese camera?  I just want to make sure I'm buying a (used) reputable Nikon product rather than a gray-market import.

I've used this table as a guide in the past.

The last complete cameras made in the Sendai plant for the full production run were the D5 and Df. D6 production was started in Sendai, but later moved to Thailand.

The only difference between gray-market and official imports is one of distribution channels, warranties and repair channels. The products are the same all over the world.

The only way to check is to call the local Nikon distributor and ask them to check if the serial number is in a batch meant for your region.

Roland's site is a good resource, but as to is built on reported numbers, not officially allocated number series' it has proved to be less than precise now and then. If the serial number is in the middle of a series, it is probably correct.

Thank you all for your helpful replies.  I see there is no absolutely perfect answer and it's difficult, if not impossible, to determine by looking at the item but every little bit helps.
