Hello Everyone,

My name is Raihan and I just became the member of this famous forum. I just started Bird photography not too long ago and using both my D7000/7100 with Sigma 150-600mm lens. Even though crop sensor giving me more focal length yet I found I'm lacking while I try to take a zoom shot of small birds. I was wondering if someone can confirm if I can add a Nikon Teleconverter with Nikon-Sigma pair and if possible which one would be the ideal one to get more reach? As far as i know Nikon offers three different kinds.

Please accept my apology if it's the wrong place to put this topic. Thanks in advance. Kind Regards. Raihan.

The Nikon teleconverters need to be permanently modified with a Dremel tool to fit on third-party lenses like the Sigma, even when there is no interference between the rear element of the lens and the protruding front element of the TC.

A Sigma TC-1401 will, however, fit as long as you remember to mount it to the lens before attaching the combination to the camera. You can even fine-tune the autofocus with the Dock without affecting the fine-tune of the naked lens. I am not sure how well the AF will work as the combination will be slower than what is recommended for your cameras. As a TC usually lower contrast a bit, you will probably get results that are about equal to cropping and uprezzing the photo in post.

Talking about the compatibility between Nikon and Sigma lenses, Nikon teleconverters are typically designed to work with Nikon lenses, and Sigma teleconverters are designed to work with Sigma lenses. However, some combinations of Nikon and Sigma lenses and teleconverters may be compatible, depending on the lens mount and other factors.

It is possible to use teleconverters with Nikon and Sigma lenses, it's important to carefully research and test the compatibility and performance of your specific lens and teleconverter combination to ensure optimal results for bird photography.
