The Z8 would probably be way too expensive for me, although it probably wouldn't hurt to have a look. Assuming Nikon does announce a Z8, it likely won't be ready for sale immediately anyway. And, I'm pretty sure the waiting list will be 'round the block.'

However, I also noticed a reference to a possible Z6III upgrade. That's probably going to be closer to something I can afford. We'll see, I guess.

I am looking for the second hand market, this year 2023 would be very interesting if new models like Z8 or Z6III appears soon.

I can easily imagine the second hand Nikon DSLR with lower prices, that means for me, more people selling and upgrading to Z series, means opportunity to find lenses and good stuff that usually hard to find. ^_^

Something new arrives.... Z8? Z90? 200-600? Is the V1 reborn?

Yeah, I got a notification from Nikon about an "event" on May 10th, I believe. Scuttlebutt is that it's the Z8 launch event. Beyond that, and of course, the usual rumor mongering, I know nothing.

I somehow doubt if the V1 will reemerge although one never knows. Never say never.

We'll have to see if the third upgrade to the Z6 and Z7 are part of the announcement. Once again, except for the rumor mill,  I haven't heard anything specific. I'm looking at the possibility of purchasing a Z6II now that the price has come down a bit, but I'll wait until after this event before deciding.

I reckon it’s the Z8 although the Z6/Z7 iii might arrive as well. I’m seeing the Z8 as a D850 equivalent and if that is the case, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to have a 60mp sensor and a bit less speed than the Z9. What ever Nikon has decided, hopefully they’ll have improved the autofocus over the Z6/7

Many rumors have the Z8 being just that. A Z version of the D850... or, in some cases, little more than a Z9 with the vertical grip sliced off.

Last I heard, the announcement will be for the Z8, and only the Z8. However, rumors being what they are, I wouldn't at all be surprised if something else was announced at the same time.... a lens or two, perhaps.

I'm reasonably sure that, assuming it's a Z8 their announcing, it will be priced way out of my range.

Seeing as how a Zfc is way out of my price range, I am completely sure the Z8 will be!

Well, I would really like to upgrade to a mirrorless camera, but with things the way they are at the moment, I'm having a hard time justifying any non-essential purchases. I'm not going to elaborate beyond that.

I know that feeling!

However, I’m hoping the Z8 will be a Z9 without the vertical grip, with a slightly lower continuous speed but tweaked AF and a 60mp sensor. You, know - just in case I can  afford a second hand one in a few years time! :D

Yeah, from what I've seen so far, it's *almost* exactly like a Z9, minus the grip. But, you can add the grip later if you're so inclined... and it would still be cheaper, tho not by much, than the Z9. An all around impressive offering from Nikon. Should sell very well, provided it doesn't take too long to get out to dealers.

Maybe Nikon will now get serious about discounting the D850. LOL

It seems to be a much closer parallel to the D700 than either of the D8xx bodies ever were. The only thing missing is a grip that can use the en-el18d battery. It will be interesting to see what the street price will be when they start producing enough to more or less satisfy the demand.

The battery decision is a bit puzzling and, I'm sure, will be a bone of contention with reviewers.

B&H is taking preorders at list.

It appears that, at least until some major advance in battery technology, we’re going to have to live with poor battery life in mirrorless cameras.

It appears that, at least until some major advance in battery technology, we’re going to have to live with poor battery life in mirrorless cameras.

One of the few "preview" videos I've seen is from a UK landscape photographer, Thomas Heaton, who was allowed to use one for a very short period of time--Nikon even sent a chaperone to keep an eye on the camera-- and, well, anyway, one of Tom's beefs about the Z8 was in how bulky and heavy it was compared to his Z7. Seems that while the Z8 is smaller than both the Z9 and the D850, it's still a pretty big camera. Especially for a mirrorless. The point here is that, I naturally assumed the weight was due in part to a larger battery to run the high resolution sensor, and all the electronic bits that give us those nice bright colors, etc. But, no... it uses the same battery as the Z7... on down to our old DSLR's. Puzzling indeed. Heaton decided, at the end, that while he thought the Z8 was a great camera, it wasn't enough of an upgrade to convince him to trade in his Z7.

And, the battery life is... to be honest, abysmal. Better carry spares if you're shooting away from a source of electricity. If Nikon truly wanted to make a baby Z9, they should have at the very least, offered a grip option that included the higher spec cells.

I'm sure Nikon will sell boatloads of them. :P

--Ron

Edit: Seems the Z8 is only smaller than the Z9 if you don't attach the vertical grip. With the grip in place, it's actually considerably bigger than the Z9. So, if you're looking for a relatively small Nikon mirrorless camera with a vertical option, the Z9 is probably the better choice. Especially if you're also worried about battery life in the field.
