I'm old school having taken some great shots with my 5500 over the past 10 years. It's wearing out an thought about going with a 7500, but if has less resolution (20.9 vs 24.2 MP) Given that, would you suggest getting another used 5500, or is there something I'm missing about the 7500?

Thanks in advance.

It also has newer and better firmware (Expeed 5, which is the same image processing software that's found in the D500), better AF performance, higher ISO range, a real pentaprism (rather than the pentamirror in your 5500) so the viewfinder will be considerably brighter. All of your current lenses should work fine. The camera is more rugged, etc...

Get the D7500.

I agree.

I want to add one thing to Ron’s post and that is the fact that the D500/D7500 sensor is clean enough at high ISO that it is usually possible to blow the photo up larger than from the 24 MP DX sensors.

The MP are not important to define the better camera, you must consider other aspects, like Ron said.
