Thanks fro the add

Bought a P1000 to supplement my Sony FF DSLR and lenses.

I am not sure about the quality of the pictures. Based Northampton UK

The obligatory Moon photo is good and sharp, but pictures of aircraft show degradation the further away they are.

Tried obvious settings with stabiliser on, Sports mode, Aperture mode, Shutter priority to get the speed up 1/1000 - 1/2000 std program mode

all of these don't significantly alter quality. Other pictures on facebook show similar issues although some can be sharper.

I have looked at RAWs and no difference

I have a suspicion it might be pollution causing this effect.

any comments welcome.

Heat can be causing some of the distortion.  Not sure about pollution, but a quick Google search shows that may be the case.  I've been using a P1000 since August and was well aware of the shortcomings before I make the purchase.  The auto-focus system isn't great, and pics shot a 3000 mm aren't as sharp as closer ones.  All that being said, as a new birder, it's the best camera for me.

Sorry - no advice on how to get better photos.  Just appreciate the longest focal length on the market and get the most out of the features.
