Good afternoon,

I'm not a photographer myself but my wife is an avid one. She loves her Nikon D80 but it's getting a little aged. I'd like to surprise her with a new one but have no idea about the current models. Can anyone recommend a Nikon that is similar to the D80 to use but more up to date. Many Thanks Michael.

The D7500 is the direct descendant of the D80. It will probably be the last Nikon with a mirror in this class of cameras. There is no direct replacement in the mirrorless lineup as the Z50 is much more compact and the Z5 or Z6II are full-frame.

your best bet is used D7200 or Z5 or Z6 used. also with rumor of Z6 gen 3 coming out could get Z6 for around $900 used. but Z50 good starting point. also if want here to go mirrorless rent the mirrorless body first to see if she likes or not. since mirrorless not for all. also could look at used D500 or D780 for around 1k too. i say go mirrorless and get FTZ gen 2 and use F mounts in till you can afford mirrorless lenses. since nikon not making any more DSLR and is stop making F mounts lenses. also not sure how long keep all F mount lenses too.

I much prefer the D7200 (I have 2 of them) over the D7500.  Unlike the D7500, it takes a battery pack and has provision for 2 SD cards.

I do prefer the D7200 over the D7500, but if one comes from the D80, the dumbed-down F-mount and the single card slot probably matters less...

The D7500 has much better S/N ratio and an even larger dynamic range compared to the D7200.

The OP is looking for a current camera as a gift, recommending discontinued or used doesn't seem to fit the brief. I would gladly buy a used D7200, but unlike the OP, I know what to look for when buying used.

Interesting question and although I have been a Nikon user most of my life my reccomendation (gasps from the forum) is one of the Fuji XT Mirrorless series. These are superb, solidly and beautifully made cameras which are fabulous to handle and simple to use with a wonderful ergonomic design which makes them really intutitive to use. They are also great for anyone who really wants to try and use a camera in a more 'manual' way! If its 'only a Nikon' for you then you will still get a great camera but do take a look at the Fuji XT series mirrorless cameras.

Good luck!
