Hi, I have just upgraded from a D700 to Z9. I am shooting some products using studio flash units with a remote trigger and seem to have hit a problem to which I'm sure there is a simple solution!

Camera is set to Manual, ISO 640, F22 and 1/160 and therefore the viewfinder and monitor are showing black as there isn't currently enough light to focus etc. Of course once the flash goes off those settings are about right, but how do I frame and focus my shots if I can't see anything in the viewfinder?! Of course this wasn't ever a problem with a DSLR but the Z9 is mirrorless and showing a preview of what I would be shooting if there wasn't a flash... I'm guessing there is a setting somewhere that will help me but can someone point to it please!!

I don't own a Z9 but, I'm guessing that it doesn't have an AF lamp like your old D700. But I'm also surprised that your studio flash doesn't have it's own modeling light. That's obviously what you need.

Hopefully one of our better educated members can be of more help.

I don’t own a Z9 either, but I think that custom function d9 is what you are looking for if you have the current firmware in the camera. It was renamed in firmware version 3.0, I think it used to be d8.

i own Z9 and still learning. if need some help on using flash like you said. try youtube or many of nikon groups on Facebook or some portraits groups or froknows photo group would give better idea. i think you and I are only on this board with Z9. i just got Z9 and do not like menu system do not do flash much. you also need to make sure remote flash your using works with Z9 too. not all remote or wireless remotes work with Z9 too.
