1) When I receive a new lens is it safe to assume that it comes with all the latest updates, or do I assume its been laying in storage for the last six months, or whatever, and needs to be up-dated.

2) When updating a lens firmware, I assume it has to be attached to the camera but do you then treat it the same as a camera update or do I need to do something different.

Cheers

I don't have any Z series gear John.
I had a look at Nikon support, and the exact instructions are included with the downloaded firmware. The lens has to attached to the camera for the update.

Go to the Nikon Support site for your region, find the lens you want to check for updates and, if necessary, update the firmware. Follow all instructions to the letter, such as how to check the installed firmware to see if it needs updating.

This link should take you to the download center for the UK.

do not think all news lenses are updated or not. since all depends on this and have to think of this first. it comes down to how long place you got lens from had said item. also depends like some local or big camera store will do updates before they ship out the lenses. since do not want to ship or give some lens does not work because of update not on lens or camera to use said lens.

I would have thought that it was good practice for every supplier to ensure their cameras and lenses were all updated to the latest firmware before they sold them, but there ya go, that's me.

Also, I was not sure whether the firmware you downloaded actually updated the lens itself or it updated the camera lens adjustment program. Saying that though, if there are different firmware updates for different lenses, then it speaks for itself.

It must be a real pain for you pro guys and gals, having to check every one of your lenses for updates and then updating them before you go out on the road.

An NPS membership comes with email updates whenever a registered lens or body gets a firmware update.

In the last 5 years I've not registered anything.

I have purchased 3 camera bodies ie DX D7500, FX D850, & Z 7ii. As well, 12+ Nikkor Lenses, 3 x TC's and 1 x Z2FX adaptor.

All my stuff is specified on my home contents insurance, so I have never had an email.

Never thought about it really, I just assumed that everything would be supplied to the latest spec, then every few months, I needed to check for updates.

Looking at my camera firmware the D850 & Z 7ii cameras have a C, an LC, and an LF Firmware listed. The D7500 has C and LD firmware listed.

Is LC, LF and LD Firmware all related to Lens Firmware ?

So then, every time I change the Camera Lens, the camera will show a different Lens Firmware.

Looks like I have some checking-up to do lol.

Just thought, LD = DX Lens, LF - FX Lens. Whats LC ????

If you install Nikon's NX Studio software, I believe it comes with a little app called Nikon Message Center 2 that runs in the background and provides notifications of software and firmware updates for most recent Nikon products. I have NX Studio installed on my Windows 10 laptop and it works great there, However, I don't have NX Studio installed on my Mac so I'm not sure how well it works on MacOS.
