I went to a seminar about copyright law last week. I will try to summarise a fact I didn’t know before.

The copyright notice we can put in the files from our cameras can trip us up if it doesn’t follow a legally correct pattern.

© is *not* a substitute for the international copyright symbol. © Is the only symbol that is correct in all jurisdictions. As this symbol isn’t available in the camera, you need to write it out as either Copyright or Copr.

A correct copyright notice should be in the format:

Copyright_[year]_[Name or corporate entity]

If it isn’t formatted correctly, it is better to leave it out completely as the Berne convention gives full protection in most jurisdictions.

If you need to pursue a copyright infringement, your legal counsel has much greater chance of winning your case if there is nothing muddying the facts.
