Hi there.
My son has recently been gifted a D3100 and was looking to buy a Nikon ED AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 D as a zoom lens.
Apologies for the stupid question as I know nothing about cameras but is this lens compatible with a D3100?

D3100 compatible zoom

Screwdrive (AF-D) lenses will not be able to autofocus with the D3100. You would need to get an AF-S version with a built-in focusing motor, such as this one:

Newer AF-P lenses also won't work. You might find this chart helpful:
