I am debating between the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S and the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S on my Z 7II.

I have not used a Prime lens before.

I intend to use the lens when I photograph birds, animals (and perhaps even insects from the minimum distance for the lens). I realize that neither lens is a Macro.

What are the key differences between the lenses (other than one is prime and the other a zoom). How will the prime/zoom difference impact my photography?
