This is a D5000. After all these years I want to use it to take a photo of family including me by remote control. That remote control bit is clear in the manual and works.

My question is: if I connect my camera to my Samsung TV using an HDMI cable, will I be able to see what the camera's monitor shows in real time as I take the photos. The idea is to be able to see what I am shooting from inside the group being photographed.

I hope this makes sense and that I can do it...

Many thanks,

peter

Your D5000 should be able to mirror the LiveView monitor to HDMI with the right cable. To make sure you get the right cable, visiting a brick and mortar store might be advisable.

Never having owned a D5000, I am not sure what cables or adapters were included or the exact specs when buying a cable...

Hello Peter,

I'm fairly sure you'll need a video capture device like this:

Audio Video Capture Card, 4K HDMI to USB 2.0 Video Capture Device, 1080P HD | eBay

I wanted to do this, but but using a tablet. You'll need the right conversion cable from camera to capture device.

I found it was a bit hit & miss. It would work on some tables & not others!

oops - crossed with Peters post.

No capture device needed to stream the signal to HDMI in in a TV. With the D5000, it will show everything that is on the LV screen, though. It is too early for the clean video signal from the HDMI port that we more or less take for granted to use a modern camera for vlogging at higher quality than the compressed video in-camera.

I stand corrected!

If I can find my HDMI with the 'mini HDMI' plug one end, I'll try it into the HDMI socket of my monitor.

I don’t think I can be of much further help as I never owned any of the consumer level Nikons. I have seen lots of the capabilities and drawbacks they have, though. I ran clinics/workshops with most new Nikonowners in Uppsala between 2004 and 2019 in a cooperation between the largest Nikon dealer and the temperance movement’s educational branch.

As ever, Peter has the upper hand when it comes to Nikon knowledge levels.

I located my mini HDMI to HDMI lead & plugged it into my D3300.

I was able to annoy my wife by unplugging our FreeSat box & connecting said camera to the TV.

Liveview showed the camera output, and I took a picture in this mode.

The only draw-back is a slight delay between 'live' & displayed 'live'.

This is in the order of milliseconds, & gives an echo effect on the audio.

Thanks guys. I have now tried it and it works. May I ask a further question?

When i take a photo, a green square appears in the center of the picture and the camera hunts for focus for several seconds. This happen occasionally at other times but now it happens every time. Can I get rid of this "feature"?

renewed thanks,

peter

What AF mode are you in? Continuous or single-shot? ( AF-C or AF-S)

Glad that worked ok for you Peter.

The green square indicates the the subject is in focus. A red square means it isn't.

I had a quick search of the D5000 manual - available for free from Nikon Support - there doesn't seem a way to suppress it.

This is hardly surprising, as you wouldn't know if the subject was in focus or not, when using auto-focus.

Switching to manual focus on my D3300 gives a red box which doesn't change to green when focus point reached.

Merco_51: I in single shot.

g4aaw pete: I'll try manual focus, which should eb ok as I am shooting a group of people in a fixed place.

Thanks,both,

peter

If you set the camera up for back button focus and continuous focus, you can autofocus it for the group and  then get in place yourself. As AF-C has release priority, the camera won’t hunt for focus before release. BBF and AF-C gives you the convenience of autofocus with the fast response of manual focus.

Happy Christmas both!

I'll get back when I have taken the photos on Christmas day.

(Merco_61, are you related to Father Christmas?)

It worked but there seemed to be a lot of fuss getting the TV to see the pictures continually. I used autofocus and single shot remote control on a tripod. the quality of the TV picture was much worse than the phot in Picasa.

Many thanks, guys.

happy new year.
