I'm thinking of buying a z50 with the 16-50 and 50-250 kit lenses for landscape (trees and forest interior scenes) and photographing artwork. The sample photos I've seen look sharp and quite good overall. But I'm considering the 18-140 instead. Which would you think is best? Most of my shots are in the 50-the low hundreds range.

If you don't have 16 mm covered, you *will* end up in a situation where you can't step back to compose the scene with the 18 mm focal length. At least, that has been my experience.
Is the artwork flat or three-dimensional? Both the 16-50 and the 50-250 render 3-D objects beautifully when properly lit, I am not so sure about the 18-140. I should add that I haven't owned an 18-140, so my experience is with borrowed lenses. If it is more of a repro situation, the 16-50 does a passable job with software that has a profile for the lens. If it is flat field you are after, the Z 50 macro is at least equal to the old 55 mm micronikkors that were the go-to lenses for macro in their day. I am not sure how the 18-140 handles flat-field and distorsion as I haven't used them enough.

You also might want to consider the full frame Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S. They're available used, which is how I got mine, for an affordable price.
I have the kit lenses and am quite pleased with how they perform but at the time I got my Z50, the 18-140 didn't exist and I wanted a good walking around lens. The 24-70 on the Z50 gives a FOV corresponding to 36-105mm which fit my needs nicely. The only caveat is that it doesn't have VR like the native Z DX lenses but judicious shutter speed selection can take care of that.
